The writing on the wall is that Gaethje's well on the way on his decline from contender to gatekeeper and Paddy's ceiling, with mediocre striking and shitty takedowns at age 30 after more than a decade of doing this professionally, is gatekeeper, and that any kind of title fight between the two of them is utterly ridiculous, interim title or not. A title fight where neither fighter is so much as a solid contender should never, ever happen. Better to leave the title vacant or let the champion sit out and not bother with an interim title. Sometimes happenstance means that one side of a title fight is completely undeserving, but we should never have a title fight like this one.

Gaethje is 3-1 in his last 4 fights with his one loss to Holloway.

He beat Fiziev in his last fight and his win before that was knocking out Dustin.

There is nothing to indicate that he's still not fighting at a very high level outside of his loss to Max, who has extremely fast/good hands, it was just a bad matchup because Gaethje is more plodding like a tank.

Paddy does not have hands like Max. His path to victory is to take Justin down and submit him but the only guys that have done that in his career are absolutely elite grapplers like Oliveira and Khabib.

The logic is pretty simple: Gaethje's bottom game and submission defense are questionable, while Paddy has solid top control and is very good at finding subs.

Gaethje has good scrambles, so the question is whether Paddy can take him down and control him. If Paddy gets it done, I suspect it will be via back control (possibly obtained while standing).

I'm riding with Gaethje here. Paddy's win streak is VERY dubious. We all know Tony was washed, but I think Chandler is more washed than most people realize. And Gaethje won't dive into a guillotine like Bobby Green did.

Everybody beats Chandler. He has a 2-5 UFC record

Justin has better TDD than Chandler and isn't going to try to take it to the ground like Mike did several times until the third gassing himself out like an idiot. He will fight like he did when he ruined Tonys career. Taking Justin down is no easy feat.

He has Wittman in his corner who is good at game planning.

Paddy is a good up and comer but the odds are underestimating Gaethje here big time.

Paddy isn’t a good fighter. But there’s two factors to consider here.
1) While better than Paddy, Gaethje was never that good himself and he’s old.
2) What Paddy does excel in happens to be Gaethje’s weakness. Even though he’s British, Paddy is technically considered to be a grappler.

So he should be able to pull it off. But again, he was getting his ass kicked in Cage Warriors so it’s not a guarantee.
