Did Jones pick the best time to move up?

Cain, JDS, Werdum, and Overeem beat the brakes of bones. Mir and (ufc version)cro cop are closer I’d still favor Mir. Jones picked the perfect time, if he can beat Gane I don’t think anyone else will give him trouble.
Dam..a prime Cain getting unleashed vs Jones lol, I’d pay $80. Lesnar as well.

im sorry, but was cro cop ever in the mix in the ufc heavyweight scene??

Jones picked the right time to move up in 2017 when he called out Brock Lesnar

How would he have faired if he moved up when JDS, Werdum, Mir, Cain, Overeem, and Cro Cop were all in the mix?

Edit - this is not a diss against Gane. He is a beast and I’m excited to see what he brings. I also think there are some other intriguing matchups for Jones currently at heavyweight as well.
Ubereem has Jones for a snack in between snacks.

Jones had publicly stated he picks opponents. The fact he never fought the biggest hitters in each division (Rumble or Ngannou) should tell you all you need to know.

That Gonzaga fight was a title eliminator, so yeah, he was in the mix at first.

Blades, Volkov, Spivac, Aspinall, and Pavlovich all give Jon trouble.

nice. thanks bro.

but when ts lists the other fighters which were near 3 years apart to include cro cop (when gonzaga fight happened 2007) in the mix seems a bit strange because when jds and cain and mir were contending that was 2010-2013. so it seems strange to include cro cop in that category of fighters because in 2010-2013 cro cop was fighting guys like cheick congo, mustapha al turk, schaub, perosh and pat barry.. none of them were in the mix when jds, cain and mir were.

He weighted for HW to fumble and Francis to leave then bailed before becoming a Twitter tough guy.

There's a chance he could have got a Francis fight had he taunted him to it.

Doubting he wants the smoke like I doubt this happen till I see it

Yeah for sure, Cro Cop wasn’t even ranked by late 2009 IIRC. He was nowhere near a title picture at the time when JDS and Cain were champs, he crossed paths with JDS when JDS was green and Cro Cop had fallen out of the Top 10. And actually Werdum’s title run wasn’t till years after either.

Its tough to say. Yes, I believe Cain and prime Miocic were tougher matchups. However, Jones is 35 and coming off a 3 year layoff. The x-factor in this fight is Gane's power. He's generally looked at as a point fighter, long range fighter etc. But if given the chance he can put anyone's lights out(just look at JDS fight). I think Jones is showing a lot of guts by taking this fight. He's daring to be great.
Gear and guts don't go together. Assuming no manufacturer education excuse by usada or corruption judges sure. Till then I'm a skeptical panda.

This would be an extremely impressive win due to the circumstances. Gane is no joke and Jon is no longer in his prime and has 3 year rust.

Hats off to Jones for even making the move. I figured he was done after the video of him being handcuffed on the police cruiser.

Yes. I wouldn't be surprised if UFC was happy to push Francis out to make things easier for Jones. And apparently the winner is getting Stipe.

It would have been easier for him to move up when he was juicing. Easier to pack on muscle.
Now he's going to get dominated.

You're such a pessimist.

He's probably still juicing. They conveniently just changed the limit of acceptable PEDs to such a high amount that Jones is calling himself a hero.

No. He should have fought Brock.

Ya he was smart to wait. Less skilled grapplers now.

Werdum mops the floor with him. Better striking and grappling.

Mir is the same as above.

JDS too big, fast and strong, good enough grappling defense. It depends on how much JBJ cardio holds up. Winnable for Jones similar to Gane but not as east

Cain healthy would pose problems due to wrestling acumen which cancels JBJ grappling but he is short for HW. It would likely look similar to Reyes v Jones

Stipe old now but back then too big, fast, good enough wrestling defense and much better striker.

Overeem same as stipe but even taller with more reach which poses more problems for JBJ. Rumor has it he owned Jones at Greg Jackson's

Crocop was too old at that point. OWGP Crocop likely breaks JBJ legs with kicks. Cage is always an X factor with Crocop though. He's lateral movements was better suited for ring.

Jones has beaten better strikers, grapplers and moxes of the two than the list above but they were all shorter than him with much less reach.

He looked extremely average, beatable and arguably lost to less skilled fighters who were closer to his size.

JBJ relatively slow for LHW but overcomes that and skill gap with reach and height leverage (grappling) Both are gone at HW. Now he can just grapple to win though since there are only strikers at the top

Jon said he wanted to surpass Anderson's title defense record so he set his mind on being at LHW for a while. But I have a sneaky suspicion that Jones was afraid of JDS. Prime JDS (the dude that KOd Werdum and Gonzaga) was terrifying. Jon looked up and didn't want any of that.

I kinda get it. It's Jon Jones and the Francis/Ciryl fight is fresh in people's minds. They have a hard time projecting the growth of a fighter.

Gane is the favorite, IMO. Jon can still win this but it won't be as much with skill, it must be with experience and grit.

We sharing laughs and knowledge tonight.
Skill is on Jon Jones side.

actually surprised he didn't come back earlier to take out all of the old lions like he did at lhw.

so no, he likely would have been better off taking on guys his own age or older.

i still think he wins tonight but gane is not the easiest fight in the division for him

now on the money end i bet he did real well
