Did James Toney really have CTE?

Slurred speech is just of many symptoms of CTE , you can't diagnose it from a video, and just because somebody's speech is or isn't slurred isn't confirmation of having or not having CTE, One thing for sure is that version of james toney was light years removed from his prime and didn't have an ounce of the desire and motivation he once had. He took that fight for the money and nothing else.

I met him a few times when he was a Cruiserweight. He sounded about the same to me. Not like the dude was the clearest of talkers before and he was fatter when he got to the UFC.

Chuck is the most obvious drop off I can think of.

chuck moves around like his nervous system doesn't work right or his spine is snapped in half. i still can't believe the people around him didn't talk him out of the tito fight.

I saw a video of Nam Phan, newer fans won't remember him but dude clearly has a case of CTE and it's painful to listen how much he slurs his words, hes still very young and I could name a dozen of fighter who took more damages in fights. Crazy how it can affect people in different ways. Wish him the best.

And here is him in 2013;

Jesus that's pretty bad. I definitely remember Nam from before, yikes. That's just sad. These guys really need a pension and medical after they are out of the sport like Football has. This is criminal.

What was it like in the 80s?

Yeah I just edited my post and added a video of him 8 years ago. Night and day difference, fuck it's sad.

Nah.

Cannabis.

That requires a medical diagnosis, but he'd taken some serious leather over the years and was long long long long past his athletic or combat best.

Yeah that’s terrible. If I remember correctly he got into boxing and that’s where he got the most trauma

That video clearly shows his signs of brain damage and slurring in his later years..

James Toney was the 160 lb Middleweight Champ of the world. He fought as high as 190 while looking in decent enough shape and won the Cruiserweight belt.

For his whole career he had terrible eating and training habits. The biggest fight of his career was against Roy Jones and he had to lose something like 30 lbs in a week. So that just shows you how poor his habits were.

As his career went on he just moved up in weight instead of worrying about diet and conditioning. All he literally did to train for fights was spar multiple times a week.

The guy was a fat mess by the time he went to the UFC. He was old and he had early signs of brain damage. He also was purely a phone booth counter puncher at that stage in his career so he had the worst style to cross over.

The whole thing was a joke and as a huge James Toney and Boxing fan I was embarrassed.
As high as 190? He fought at HW and weighed nearly 240. He's also one of the few to stop Evander Holyfield.

for years James has shown the signs of - Dementia Pugilistica (DP), otherwise known as “punch-drunk syndrome" or “boxer's dementia," is a form of dementia that originates with repeated concussions or other traumatic blows to the head. Unsurprisingly, boxers and other professional athletes in aggressive contact sports are the primary victims of DP.

Does he have CTE? Thats to be determined

I want to see Toney vs Tyson in an exhibition fight if Toney is even remotely in shape. I always felt like he was the 1 boxer who could school Tyson in a straight up fight without all the grabbing and clinching.

You should bear in mind that when professional mics are used, the speech always sounds way more clear (especially compared to potato phone mic). I'm not sure if he has CTE, he sounds quite bad from the beginning. But listening to his trash talk was utter cringe, he sounds like a 10-year old child.
Nothing worse than dry mouth on mics.

Nah. Just the way he talk.... the Karl Malone of boxing.

But in the video I posted, you can already start to see the early stages of CTE, and what's crazy is that he only had one knockout loss by that point, so he must've been having a lot of gym wars.
I'm no expert but it seems that the guys who get into wars and take sustained damage suffer more than those who go night night easily like Reem and Arlovski
