Regarding Chinese origin, it seems pretty certain that it originated in either China or from somewhere neighbouring in the south-east of Asia, given the natural habitat range for the bats that harbour the most closely related coronaviruses. There are some things that suggest that the wildlife trade could have been heavily involved in causing this but what role the wet market environment played in facilitating the jump is unclear. A few years before the outbreak, a biologist and virologist from Australia visited the same market and concluded:
