He started to fight better competition? I mean its pretty clear he's not the same fighter he once was, but i don't think he went downhill as soon as he fought cain. There is something to be said about level of competition, usually the fighters get the worst match up from the ufc after they become champions, cause the ufc wants to create new stars.

Jds wins before cain are very good don't get me wrong but they were basically a roy nelson ( power puncher and not much more ) an out of prime frank mir and gonzaga.

After cain he has only fought against the best and the best upcomers of the division and to be fair he won most of those fights, but he also lost some and thats in my opinion has more to do with his oponents than himself.

Yes

It wasn’t just the physical beatdown, it took its toll psychologically and mentally. You have to consider that JDS rolled through every fighter prior, and then proceeded to get the life beaten out of him.

To me, this is the clearest “before” and “after” for any fighter in MMA history.

EDIT: also I consider his win over Cro Cop to be very legit. That was the very best Cro Cop looked in any UFC fight. He was fast, landing counters, and showing some aggression. JDS simply walked him down, and it was impressive.

Clearly it had a huge impact.

JDS had a fantastic chin that allowed him to go in with his fantastic offense. His defense was never good but his chin saved him.

Now, he gets dropped by anything that lands solidly including a jab.

Fighting isn't just about technical skill ... its also about your physical abilities such as Jon Jones' reach, Hendo's power/chin.

JDS had a strong chin. Now ... he doesn't.

what a ridiculous summary of JDS wins.

Cain
Carwin
Mir
Werdum
Crocop
Hunt

all in their prime.

youd have trouble finding a HW with 5 prime wins that are better.

Neither werdun nor mir was in their primes, i can even take mir at this but werdun was cut from the ufc after he lost to jds. That was not prime werdun at all and as i said he won many of those fights

Stipe was a great win too. I know I'm in the minority here, but I favor a prime/near prime JDS over any version of Stipe. While Cro Cop was past prime, he was fast af and injury free before UFC 103 and looked damn good. JDS took a little damage but still finished him.

JDS is mega underrated imo. At his peak, he could beat any HW ever. I'd only favor a 2 or 3 over him prime for prime.

He also got old. People forget JDS only fought once a year for like a 4 year stretch of his career

Werdum was unquestionably already a world class fighter by 2008, but he was out of shape for the JDS fight. His prime was clearly upon his return to the UFC though. Would it have really mattered in the end? Prime JDS is knocking him the fuck out.

I think people might get what im saying wrong, no doubt the jds of today is much worse than the jds who fought cain, but had jds fought stipe, overeem, ngannou, curtis blaydes, cyril gane would he be undefeated at that time? The ufc likes to protect their prospect and trown the old veterans to the wolves. There is something to be said about who is he fighting and in what frequency he's fighting this beasts

JDS got beat down bad twice. It wasn't a quick knock out. It was a sustained beating for 10 rounds. You don't come back the same from that kind of beatdown.

It was apparent that he had slowed down in his immediate fight afterwards.

Bro, I think prime JDS walks through the current division, minus Ngannou and Stipe - both of which I'd favor JDS over, and Cain for that matter.

I think prime JDS vs Ngannou would have been amazing.

- MIR: had won 3 in a row, including stopping Crocop and Big Nog. It was def "Prime Mir".

- WERDUM: if it wasnt his prime, it was sure close- he had won 3 of last, 4, then went on another 3 fight win streak including subbing Fedor. if he wasnt in his "prime", he was certainly a great win.

- you conveniently didnt mention Carwin, Cain or Crocop.
