Coaching Development of the War Dogs:

So my Son is on the cover of a local Kids' magazine. The link is here:

There's a bit about him inside. We have another event this Saturday and if he gets matched it will be his 5th fight. But 3 of the first 4 were against the same kid. That's just how it is in the Amateurs at that age. The last 2 fights were very close though:

Red corner for both bouts.

Recent addition to my team is a young fella named Ryan. Ryan has intangible physical gifts that any boxer would want. He's 6'2" and can comfortably make 147, carries a punch, decent hand speed, and hes very durable.

But hes one of the most high-anxiety kids I've ever trained. Like if he shadowboxes at his house in the morning and feels a little winded, he wont come to the gym if it's a sparring day out of sheer terror that he might gas and do bad. And it's not taking a beating, he's done that before, it's just the feeling of doing poorly. Had a Father who chided him all the time about every little thing, who also freaks out at any little thing going wrong. That said his first fight was against a kid with some experience and I thought he did well:

And then this one. Cristian fought again and this decision was pretty terrible. And I dont say that from myself, the gym's host who is also the President of the Commission even said he couldn't figure out what the judges were looking at:

Here is a clip of Cristian sparring a kid who was ranked #1 in the US on multiple occasions. The Dad is a Coach and his older Sister went to the Olympics. Now, they used to spar a lot when they were little, and the Dad hadn't seen Cristian in probably 2 or 3 years. When they were done he asked me who Cristian was and when I told him he said: "No way that's the same kid."

Very good show yesterday. Cristian finally got a well-deserved W. During training for this he got the better of a Pro from Ecuador who threw some of the sharpest left hands I've ever seen in-person at him. So when he thought and bixed his way out of that debacle, I had a feeling he was gonna win the next bout:

This was Jake's 3rd and best bout. He's fighting the same kid as the last fight but this time Jake landed more, had better defense, and IMP proved much physically stronger despite dropping the decision:

This was Ian's 5th fight, also against the last kid he fought at the Convention Center. Ian REALLY surprised me here. My Son got sick so Ian had no sparring the entire week before the fight. Sal's hand speed is comparable to Uriah's, although Uriah has faster feet (not as fancy lol), so I was concerned Ian would lack timing. Yeah, he didnt:

Lost the decision, but I'm very happy with the effort, especially being as that kid has over 11 fights.

I got one more uploading I'll post when it's done.

This is Carlos "Bubbie" Magdaleno, nephew of Diego and Jessie Magdaleno (Jessie can be seen in the video). I've seen this kid put hands on everyone they've put in the ring with him so far. Always comes to fight and puts on a good show. He and my guy Jake are best friends (Jake's Mom said she never had any idea that Bubbie could could fight like that, because he is kind of a goofball lol), Bubbie inspired Jake to start boxing.

I didnt realize we can upload pics now:

The two Norwegians on the left, Carlos, a former student of mine who was there to spar, and my current student Angel on the furthest right.

This former student of mine who is second from the right was shot and killed over the weekend, and left dead in a driveway. One of my current students found him there. I trained that kid when he was 13-15 and despite him switching Coaches, I have a ton of respect for the Coach he switched to and he was a good fighter.

Stay in the gym man. He had stopped boxing for a few months and was uncertain what he wanted to do with himself, was drinking recreationally and he and one of his longtime friends were arguing over trying to impress a girl. It escalated and they both had guns. Now Bobby is dead and the friend is going to go to prison, and the girl will get married to and knocked up by someone else entirely.

Life is short. Stick to your dreams and talents. Stay out of the f*ckin streets.

Sad. Looked very young

Sorry for your loss, Lu. As coaches all we can do is our best

Much appreciated. One of my current students who was close to him actually saw his body in that driveway. Hes been pretty messed up since then. I'm just reiterating to them how important places like the gym are. Had he still been competing he would have been less likely to be at that party at 4:30am

Recent Nevada Silver Gloves bout for Ian. Theres a funny story behind this fight because the kid has like 26 Amateur fights, this was Ian's 8th. Before that they were matched at another show and this kid's Dad went up to Ian and told him (not me) that he scrapped the match because he felt his Son had too much experience for Ian. However Ian was then matched with a kid with like 50 fights and did decently. At this age it's just about getting the ring experience. But my question was why didnt the kid with 26 fights take the match against the kid with 50?

We know why, because they knew that kid and didnt want the "L."

So then Ian has to fight that kid at Silver Gloves anyway and aside from the initial flurry, it wasnt embarrassingly lopsided. Ian is in the blue corner:

Sorry I haven't posted here in a little while. This year I'm gonna focus a bit more on conveying what's going on with my boxing team. We recently had a pretty significant event at the Luxor. It gave the feeling of a Pro fight. The two Brothers I train, Diego and Ian, finally got to fight on the same card. Here was Ian's fight:

This was one of his best performances, according to people on attendance who knew him. It was also his 9th fight. One more and he is "open." He is matched for the 18th of this month.

This is Diego's fight:

A lot of people said they felt he got hosed. My main complaint is how much unpenalized holding the opponent did. I thought Diego landed the better clean shots, but we still need to improve his assertiveness.

And this is my Son's fight. We took a fight against a kid a little younger (albeit same wight) who is a National Champ. I wanted to see how Sal would handle the pressure and the kid really wouldn't be able to hit him much. After a rough first round I was really pleasantly surprised how he battled his way back into the fight and put pressure on the opponent. The other Coach and the rest of their team said he did really well for it only being his 5th fight:

Sal had a win recently. This was his first fight where he had to cut weight a bit and it showed in the ring. He also was a bit taken aback that the kid seemed intimidated by him when he attacked as everyone he has fought so far has been pretty aggressive:

The reason I wasnt in the corner is my license took an extra day to process. So one of the other Coaches from our gym cornered him.

Diego also had another fight. I felt this was probably his most organized and focused performance. He just got out-thrown:

Then this was from this past weekend at the Nevada Golden Gloves. My lightweight Cristian was coming off a rough loss the previous Saturday where the Commission switched out bout order and didnt tell us. We found out at the intermission that we were right after the intermission. Just before that he mentioned he had seen his opponent with the gloves and headgear on, so I went to the officials and asked what was up and they assured me we WEREN'T next. Then suddenly we were. His head wasnt in the fight at that point and he never found a rhythm. This kid takes things like that very hard, so I was surprised at how well he handled it and stayed at the show for a while longer than I expected. His attitude all week was very good, and then Saturday he turned in this kind of performance against a very high-level opponent:

He spars a lot with Julian Magdaleno (nephew of Diego and Jessie Magdaleno) and he was in the same division. He ended up beating this guy for the Championship. But we all hoped it would be Julian and Cristian in the final because it's a fun little rivalry and we have a ton of respect for each other.

The level of disorganization at some of these USA boxing events is staggering. You guys looked good coach

I hear ya. And this normally never happens at that gym's shows so it really felt like a slight to Cristian. But he has taken it in-stride.

Thursday evening he will be sparring with Mickey Bey:

Here is some video of an event that happened last weekend at our gym. Its from The Boxing Voice's podcast. I started training this dude Quindell...he got with me when he had already agreed to a fight for Border Wars 14. This is Border Wars 15, and we were the co-mai event. He is still very green as he's only been boxing for a few months. Still got the W based almost entirely on me having taught him a competent jab.

If you want to watch the whole event, the kids that open up the show are really good. Just before us was a kid from Arizona they call "Lobo" who cant crack an egg, but showed really good determination, and the ability to listen to what we were screaming for him to do in the corner (I was behind his corner men, they arent his actual Coaches). I invited him to come to Vegas to train.

Or if you wanna just watch our fight, it's at 2:28.

@DoctorTaco the main event is hilarious. A dude they call "CYP" who has been talking himself up for months and is a trainer himself agreed to take a fight and quit. Now I guess people are nuking him online, going to his Yelp and posting the clip of him quitting with a 1-star review lol Even funnier is after he quit he was outside the ring when we were cleaning up and still running his mouth.

Guys like that always manage to find a way to keep talking shit. It’s embarrassing

Had some fights go down recently. We were back at the Luxor. First is Ian, this fight was pretty wild as the kid is hyper-aggressive. After it was over a couple of former opponents told Ian they didnt think he lost. Ian out-threw the kid but the other kid landed a few flashier shots:

Second is a career rehab fighter I got. He had been around our gym for a couple of years getting smacked around in sparring. Went through 2 other Coaches before getting with my team, then he had to go back to L.A. for a few months and then came back to Vegas for good now. This was his first fight in 7 years. I expected him to freeze early, surprisingly he did well in the first and decently in the second. He froze at the end and became to pensive. He busted the other guy's nose as well, but dropped the decision:

Last is Cristian. We knew this fight would be tough as we know his opponent. Cristian told me he was nervous fighting at such a big venue. The other dude was doing a lot of wrestling and pushing his head down when he would roll, just a messy fight. Split-decision loss, but after Cristian kept looking at the big screen and when I asked him what he was looking at he said "Man, I look good." That's when I knew that not only would he be fine, but that he really does love this:

Then this next one was Sal's most recent fight. This one was interesting because this is a kid he has done well in sparring against and, for the firs time, Sal was hella hyping himself up. I actually kinda liked the swag he was exhibiting and he did really well in sparring against another kid who is more experienced than he is. But fight day came and he said he was very nervous, the expectation of doing well came in, and after the first round he was struggling. After the second round he said "I think I'm losing" and I gave him an "ok, so what are you gonna do about it?" in the corner. He fought harder and actually looked like himself in the 3rd:

Sorry for the blurriness, my guy recording it swiped the lens with his finger before starting the video.

This last one is a new addition to my team, Logan. Met him 2 years ago as well and one of the first things he told me is "Sometimes I feel like I'm not being trained right." This was after a sparring session where he was disregarding his own corner to get the better of it. His former Coach isnt a bad Coach (it's the guy who cornered Sal for his last fight), but it just wasnt clicking with Logan which caused him to quit boxing for a year. I train his Cousin-in-Law, so he came with us. This was his first fight in 2 years, opponent was a roughneck, very tough and aggressive. Logan's rust showed up:

Had an event here last Saturday. Sal fought a kid from France with twice the experience. Despite his nature as a counter-puncher I felt like this was one of his best fights in terms of punch output:

Ian had a rematch from his last fight. The last one was close, this one was less close. Not really sure what the judges want in a case like this:

Jake had his 4th fight. This was also really close but I can understand the decision because because he let too many clean right hands land. But this was also his best performance:

Last is Logan Cosio. He got an SD win that, at the event, I kinda felt like his opponent edged-out. But watching it back from the other side of the ring he did better than my viewpoint lent to:
