Depression medication anyone?

Medication is more like somebody is doing super terrible and can't cope and should start doing meds before it gets out of hand.

It's not some I feel down and not happy let me take some pills.

Hard to judge I'm not a doctor. But doctors are humans too and not entirely to trust. There's Industries, lobbies. If you could trust authorities there wouldn't be wars. The instutions you trust will tell you to get in a tank and die for them.

A few decades ago heroin came out as feel good medication that also helps vs Colds. You can read it up.

No part of society is free or corruption and mistakes.

why plan on pills ? Prob cliche to say this, but weed really helps and it’s safer than pills

Weed also helps with developing delusions and paranoia and being addicted.

Exercise is a natural antidepressant. Avoid SSRIs at all costs.

Exercise has tremendous physical and mental benefits and would definitely recommend trying that first before taking pharma pills. Even if you do decide to take pharma pills, I would still strongly recommend exercise in addition to the pills. Also, make sure you are eating well, getting enough sleep, and getting occasional fresh air and sunshine.

Life style has a big impact on mental health.

I’m prescribed Lexapro and wellbutrin but I don’t take them. When I was consistent I did feel better but adjusting to them & coming off of them can be hell.

I’m prescribed so much stuff I just don’t feel comfortable mixing all of it.

Anyone here take depression medication? Have you had any luck with it?

I'm thinking of talking to my doc about it, but have heard bad things
I do. It helps numb the pain of existence, but also numbs you more to the joys of existence. If you’re all the way suicidal on the edge of eradicating yourself, I’d say go for it. I Otherwise, I’d explore other options, since the withdrawal symptoms are severe to the point it’s like trying to kick a hard drug or something.

I’m bout to head to the gym hoping this hot babe I’ve been talking to is there so i can ask her out. Wish me luck.

Didn't they just recently announce that SSRIs are kind of BS or something like that? Like they don't know exactly what it does.

Their are a lot of things that they don't know the exact mechanism but the trials show certain effects in some people. They understand a few things that SSRIs do but there are cascading secondary effects that they don't understand. I found SSRI slightly to moderately helpful but you have to try a bunch of medications to see what works. Wellbutrin I found to be the best but that is just me but that also isn't a SSRI.

My experience with SSRIs have ranged from feeling in a good mood for no reason, a little loopy, hard to have an orgasm, and slowing down fast thoughts. I didn't have have any real side effects aside from weight gain but that is common and could have just been mostly due to poor lifestyle.

I am a bit of the opinion that while your general doctor can prescribe SSRIs, you might be better seeing a psychiatrist just due to this being their bread and butter and them being on top of new literature and witnessing results of their patients. I think general practitioners are just versed in prescribing common medications and hoping for the best. Generally, if you are needing medication you are probably in a very bad place and would probably benefit in at least saving time by seeing a specialist who could probably get you back on track quicker. It really is too bad that we are probably 30 years away from really understanding the brain and various conditions.

It never hurts to get peoples experience while they were on meds, but don't take anyone's advice here on Sherdog whether you should or should not.

You're best bet is to talk to someone who may know what they're talking about, not a bunch posters on Sherdog. You have both sides of the argument in here and both sides are very confident they are right.

Holy crap there's a lot of fear mongering in this thread.

I've been on them for a few years now. Zero side effects. Like literally zero. And there's been a few times where I stopped taking them for several weeks cold turkey and STILL had no side effects, though I still wouldn't recommend doing that

Guys you do understand that depression has a large genetic component, and also is tied to legitimate neurotransmitter dysfunction and other physical shit correct? You can’t “Bro just exercise, start bjj and change your life” out of it. This is some of the worst bro-sciency shit ever, like telling someone with high blood pressure to “slow down your heart and drink kombucha bro”. I’m not vouching for any specific medications or protocols, but if you suspect actual clinical depression consult with a real doctor and therapist, and go from there.

- I refused to take medications for years, till my brother found me hanging up with my bjj belt on my neck, on my push-up bar last december 25.

Started taking fluoxetine, and been nights and days, i go out without thinking of jump of every building in sight.

@Richmma80 - Go seek professional help, bro. Dont try to tough up. I lost a friend did the same thing as me, just one year before. Guy was good looking, had daughters, a very-good job, as some-day chocked himself with his bjj belt.

Even if the guys saying for you are good intentioned, like @Frode Falch and his new Chippendales look a like avatar.

I din't listened to anybody saying for me to seek help, and was almost too late. We just have one life, good think that unlike me, you see that maybe you need.

It's the opposite. Depression is caused by life and how you live it. Excercise and Lifestyle changes are super effective at combating depression

It's literary scientifically proven excercise is more effective at battling depression then meds.

High blood pressure is fixed easier and healthier with excercise, diet, Lifestyle, good sleeping habits then with drugs.

How do you explain that I had depression and worse illnesses of that sort but don't got them anymore. My life changed. I changed my life.

It's all about lifestyle.

Now when someone is manic ect medication could help or not. Hard to say.

It's also a mental thing and character building. Just feeling sad is not a good reason to start meds.

I don't trust meds. Food is medication
Lifestyle ect. Different parts of your life. Sleep is a huge factor.

- I still trained taekwondo on the sameday when i got hung up. Exercises are good? Are.But you and me, dont know how the person we're talking will react, i know you're well intentioned, but life is too frail, a single picture that remember T's of something that happened, or he thinks happened 20 years ago, can be the trigger to suicide.

.

I think that people need to understand that while the medications are far from perfect and often are not magical cures, they are trying to mitigate extreme issues like not being able to get out of bed, suicide, crippling anxiety, psychosis, ect. Something is clearly wrong that is having a gross impact on the individual's life and dry mouth or having difficulties having an orgasm or a lower llibido is hardly a side effect in comparison to the disease.

Is your depression so bad you really think medication would be a net-benefit for the long hawl? Because its benefits are supposed to be temporary, like a few months, prolonged use leads to lacking returns, but you may feel like you've become reliant on it.

And in recent months there's been shortages -

So, unless you're near deep depression & suicidal thoughts, tread carefully.

I am currently on them. Have been for years. Took a long time to find the ones that are effective, and find the right combination. I can honestly say without them, I would be dead now. Everyone is going to have different experiences, and there is no blanket answer for effectiveness, side effects or whether someone should or should not be on them.

If you think you may have depression, your first step should not be asking for medication though, it should be therapy. You may not need it at all, and there is no reason to take things that can affect you if you don't need them. Maybe look into some options for therapists, figure out what is going on, and go from there.

If you have any questions, I can answer them from my perspective, i have had some bad experiences with them, and obviously am having success now, so I have been on both sides.

If that’s weed... pills be on the level of super saiyan of those negatives... so why plan on taking pills that are 100x worse

Weed can be pretty strong high THC and hard to kick with real withdrawl

What do you think why people like Snoop and Whiz didn't skip a day of pot in 20 years

I took Paxil for years(along with therapy). The only side effect I had was I couldn’t have an orgasm. But that all changed when I got a more attractive therapist.

Honestly Ive thought about taking it numerous times throughout my life. I don't know if having depression is normal or what. I think I've been depressed my entire life srs

Looking back to when I was younger, I was extremely against medication and to those who took it. The words judgmental come to mind. Now it's totally different, I can understand why people take it

Despite everything I do still believe we live in a overmedicated world. I personally know 8 co-workers who are on it

People speak on their own experiences. Looks like you found something that works for you with little to no downside. I've had loved ones accidently skip a few days with nearly disastrous results. Sometimes it just takes a while to figure out what is the right drug and dose for a specific situation. And yes, doctors are human too and make mistakes just like the rest of us. Anyway, everything comes at a cost. When the situation is dire, sometimes meds are the only way to stabilize so that other forms of treatment can come into play. Also, exercise such as moderate weight training, or just a simple walk at the end o the day can do wonders.
