Dana was setting MM up for public ridicule by pretending that was a fight everyone wanted to see. It'd have done piss poor numbers just like it did when they were on the same card with different opponents. Dana would have used it to shit on MM and say something like "see MM can't even sell the fight with TJ". It was a TRAP. It was not a sincere attempt to promote MM.

In hindsight them cancelling 125 was never sincere. There's no benefit to killing a division they need every belt they can get even if no one cares. It was strictly so they could get rid of MM.

Yet Finito is a highly respected ATG boxing champion who fought at 105. Not to mention how the same community celebrates Willie Pep.

Maybe one day MMA won't be primarily supported by WWE fan boy casuals and will have real competitive sport fans.

UFC didnt even have to erase him tbh. Dude had few fans and is one of the most unpopular UFC champions of all time. Thats why UFC didn't even hesitate to trade him.

They made the right Business decision. Ben brought a spark to welterweight and being on the receiving end of Masvidals Holy Knee put UFC in a good position. They used Jorges crazy popularity to sell a shit ton of PPVs. All that upside because they traded an unpopular fighter. Well played moved.

Another bizarre financial fan. Masvidal ended up with 2 undeserved title shots and a shite performance against Colby. Setting the division back at least a year. Possibly more. At least Dana made bank though.

The issue was that he was too dominant. Every fight felt like a forgone conclusion. A story where you knew the ending.

Without him around people generally feel like anyone can become champion. It’s more exciting that way

Same can be said about any dominant champion. So why was Anderson so amazing but DJ boring?
Anderson had 10 title defenses (plus Lutter a Non Title due to weight miss by opponent) and finished 7 opponents and Cote had a knee injury that wasn't from Anderson but an existing injury.

DJ had 11 title defenses and 7 finishes. But Anderson moved up to fight 3 LHWs during his title reign. Yes they were 3 perfect style match ups as all 3 were slow sloppy brawler strikers with Zero offensive wrestling. But DJ 14-2 at BW fighting above his natural weight class and taking the BW champion to a 5 round decision. 11 of those 14 fights above his "Natural" weight class. Both similar dominant runs but one is exciting and one isn't? Makes no sense.

Now if the UFC were not a monopoly and accused of being such I would agree. However Dana being asked repeatedly about the greatest champs and UFC history and strategically leaving out the guy who earned that respect and his fights were a staple is pretty pathetic. MM success outside the UFC is absolutely not hurting the UFC. Pretending he is nobody does nothing for anyone but make the UFC look bitter and shitty. You don’t work as hard as MM to be ignored in that profession. Your name is nothing the day you leave the UFC and fight elsewhere even if they thought it for the best.
