Defense Soap.. worth it?

I would never buy Fight Soap, given that they choose to advertise their product like this. Compare that to how Defense Soap advertises.

Hmm. I may have spoken too soon, judging by this and this regarding Defense Soap's latest advertising. Not on the scale of Fight Soap, but a step in the wrong direction.

holy jeez. no offense, really, but this is the most sissy ass post i have ever read.

it is a man and woman both naked in a shower.

we humans think about sex every couple of seconds.

almost everything we do is for sex.

learn ANYTHING about market and you will know that SEX sells. period. it is a fact. there may be some hippie attempt to pussify the world, but real men and women are not having it.

yeah, we have sex and anyone who is against sex is a nihilist and thus nothing to worry about.

I've been trying this soap and I'm not sure if it works too well for me. I have an immune issue so I catch Ringworm/Staph easier than most. Currently have a small spot of ringworm on my lower back that I got since I've been using the soap, but I can usually feel the ringworm before it even shows so it's almost gone (and not sure if the soap assisted in it's removal). I'll probably continue to use it until it is gone but after that it's back to the cheap stuff.

To give my opinion to the OP,

Properly cleaned mats/gi/knee pads/head gear ect and common sense hygiene (including showering after training with regular soap) will be enough.

I am on the mats 26 classes per week.

While I don't disagree with you and find nothing wrong with that ad there are some women that are really offended by that ad. It really is nothing that bad either. It is the wording that they find offensive. It is one ad in many. Defense soap is usually really clinical with their advertising, this is just an advertising and it is not even close to fight soap ads.

Here is our response to this ad.

I am sorry if we have offended you. Please allow me to explain.

I literally had to twist my marketing department’s arm to create and publish this ad. We have always run very clinical and informational ads. I wanted to run an ad that was light hearted and let our customers know that we are grapplers too, not just a soap company profiting from your hard work. The concept of the ad for the most part was successful. This actually is the first time I had to publicly defend it. We have both woman and men who find it quit humorous. A good laugh and smile is what we were looking for. No marketing department in the world would have come up with that line unless they were grapplers themselves. The fact that we are grapplers, suffer from cauliflower ear and have had ringworm (enough times that I had to create a soap to prevent it) makes me feel I should be able to express this with my customers in this manner. That is all the ad stands for. We did not mean anything deeper then that.

Ironically, yesterday we just posted on Facebook and Twitter our continued commitment to Girls in Gis. Here is the link: http://girls-in-gis.com/blog/girls-in-gis-oklahoma-special-event-recap-photos/ We have been with them a couple of years now. I believe we are their largest and most committed sponsor providing cash, prizes and soap for all those who attend.

I ask that if you are going to judge our company you do so on the totality of what we do for all athletes and not just one ad of dozens that we have created. I will make a deal with you if you would graciously accept it. We are starting a new online grappling publication. We already have tremendous talent such as Marcelo Garcia, Eddie Bravo and Marcos Torregrosa agreed to interviews. I would be willing to have our editor grant you an interview on the topic of “a woman in Jui Jitsu” to help bring light to your cause.

Once again I am sorry if I have offend you but please judge all of me not a sliver.

Yes, I read that on a couple of blogs. I think Julia's response to you was eloquent, so I'll repost that in answer to your own repost (although you understandably modified your statement slightly to direct it at her post). ;)

Hi Guy, I saw that you cut and pasted most of this response to Chelsea on her blog as well. I sat on my comments so I could process what you were saying and respond in an even-manner.

Before we start, please be clear: My blog post shared what I wrote to you and Jits Magazine. I then asked an open ended discussion question calling for other viewpoints, NOT a boycott. I was judging your AD, not YOU.

Rereading your response, I see: explanation, deflection, accusation, and bargaining.

Explanation: why you made the ad. I appreciated this part most. It made me realize that rather than say

Lol, it's one fucking ad. So your going to stop supporting this company because of one ad? The majority of their ads are very clinical and informative. This one ad is targeted toward men. Do you get offended at those ads targeted for women that objectify men?

Give me a fucking break.

No, it's not. I have a masters degree in business, and I can tell you that any statement as reductive and simple minded as 'sex sells' is going to be wrong as often as it's right. Besides, 'sex' is not a monolithic concept. How you present the material and how the value statement you're trying to make is supported by the creative (whether it's sexual in nature or not) makes a huge difference in how the ad is perceived. There's a big difference between associating your product with sex via someone doing something seductive (say, a woman licking a popsicle) and just showing naked people. For a product like Axe deodorants, maybe naked people work well with their target audience. But that's not going to be true for all demographic groups, and if you want to use sex to sell a product to women then you're going to have to be more subtle. A commercial that I thought was really effective at using sexual marketing to women was this one:

[YT]TdrE1VMxzoE[/YT]

A little humor, definitely sexy but not in your face. But very effective. There's a scene from Mad Men that I think encapsulates fully how vacuous your argument is.

[YT]gmQqpPwxfoA[/YT]

Maybe don't be so reductive on the sex sells thing. You certainly can use sex to help sell products, but knowing your audience, the value proposition of your product, and anticipating how your audience will react to your ad are more important than just throwing some naked people on some creative.

Of all the sexist things in the world to get offended about, this ad should not be one of them.

I'm not anti feminist, but I understand why a lot of people don't take the movement seriously with complaints like these.

What we really need to do is start a campaign against Duff beer.

Sorry, it wasn't in English on Youtube.

It's okay. I remember it scene for scene. All you really had to do was say 'Duff beer'.

Hey,

I'm doing research on soaps, and read this long thread. I get jock itch every few months. It's like a routine now, I use Lamasil/Lotrmin/Etc. to get rid of it, then after few months it's back, repeat. And I don't even grapple/wrestle, just work behind a computer. I think my immune system is weak (I have acne issues (mostly back) also and athletes feet).

I had quick questions:
1) I have acne/bacne (scattered here and there), and I've read tea tree oil helps against acne, it even mentions the word 'acne' on the defense soap site. But I haven't seen others talk about acne, any info on acne would be helpful.

2) Is this soap non comedogenic? Does it clog pores or not?

3) Is it hypoallergenic?

4) Is this soap safe to use on the face?

I looked at the reviews on Amazon and they are mostly positive.

I emailed the defense person for a sample, never got a reply.

I've used defense soap and thought it was pretty awesome I don't have any affiliation with the company but I would highly recommend it to any grappler.

Probably just going to contribute to more resistant strains of bacteria with this.

http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/501996

I'll give you the summary of that link: in hospitals, they've found anti bacterial resistant strains of staph on the fucking anti-bacterial soap dispensers. That's right.

Regular soap works fine, and its method of action is not really to kill the bacteria, but creating a slippery surface which allows it to be rinsed away. The trick is to take a shower as soon as you're done training, before anything has a chance to grow and embed in a scrape or on your skin. Don't leave your gi or other gear in a bag to fester. Wash it or at least air dry it or throw it in the dryer asap.

My wife (a nurse) got a nasty mrsa infection in her leg when she was pregnant with our second child. It was a fucking nightmare. Infection wouldn't go away until the baby was born and her immune system bounced back.

You don't want mrsa, but objective evidence indicates antibacterial soaps are not the best way to prevent it.
