Deadspin: Whatever Happened To The UFC?

I don't understand how they can even print something like that. How can you just spew out statements as if they are a fact?

How does this go come to the conclusion that's what stephens is best known for? I would wager that most fans have no idea about his arrest.

Using his 10-8 record as a point just shows its a biased piece. Trying to paint stephens as a poor fighter when he's on a 3 fight win streak in his new weight class.

"Thankfully failed negotiations...." portraying that most people didn't even want to see stephens fight on that card.

His statement is a representation of the concept that Iole was making;

The UFC is casting a huge net to capture the attention of casual, or non-fans. In doing so a fighter like Stephens really is best known for being arrested but it is truly hyperbole. Even casual fans would be unlikely to remember that tidbit of information about him unless someone were to remind them.

I don't agree with the whole bland fighter statement but his assessment about what attention the causal fans will give a fighter like Stephens is actually high praise compared to reality. They just won't care that much.

I agree with his premise though; the quality of PPV is suffering in order to maintain the frequency and demand of the free cards. More MMA is appreciated but I think that the majority of fans did not expect the PPV cards to drop in quality. The factors for that quality drop vary a great deal, but regardless it is the UFC's job to shore up the weak spots. If they fail to do that for too long, they will have a big drop in hardcore fans to recover.

And the ufc doesnt even notice a "prospect" until they are 30 years old... And they don't notice HW Russian prospects at all. Weird huh?
There's a 22-year-old prospect in the co-main this weekend.

I want ufc to go back to what it was in 2009. BJ wasnt a joke, Brock Lesnar was killing the hw division, people cared about the lw/ww/mw champs and the mma was kinda cool. Now though.... ugh....

That's great you feel that way but not everyone does. Forums are a place to discuss the sport, with both positive and negative views and opinions. If what you want is a forum where everyone just cheerleads every move the UFC makes you are going to have trouble finding one.

Well yeah, I'm not an idiot, I understand how forums work and he is absolutely entitled to have and share his opinion.

I was just making my own point: People who have lost interest should consider other ways to spend their time. It's not a question of fighting the good fight; complaining on message accomplishes exactly nothing, as a community we have no power.

I think that article was heavily biased against the UFC, as are all the deadspin's spin on the UFC.

I don't get the "watered down" argument, fights are fights, so is it not a good fight just because you are unfamiliar with their names? As long as the guys are evenly matched skill/experience -wise then it can make for an entertaining fight. If they are mis-matched then isn't that what the "just-bleed" fans like--one guy beating another guy senseless?

I don't understand why fans don't get this....or cable/ppv providers....

A fight is a fight is a fight.....doesn't matter who as long as its fair and not a mismatch.....

Why would anyone want to see Jones/Gus when they could be watching stephens/Swanson....

/sarcasm

This is seriously the dumbest argument I see posters make....if you like paying for garbage, be my guest....but to pretend that you don't understand that people paying for fights want to pay for RELEVANT and INTERESTING A level competition is just trolling.....

Of course you understand....there is no reason to play dumb just to fellate the UFC brand when the UFC has clearly over saturated the market with substandard irrelavent fights and fighters that will clearly never be in title contention.....

Sounds like the UG from a few years back.....that place was unbearable with all the asskissers and people begging for free tickets.....then the place matured and now it is not much different than sherdog.....

Except Swanson and Stephens are actually fighting for a title shot. And nobody is asking you to pay for that card any more than what you aleady pay for Cable.

Losing interest in the UFC for similar reasons, I started watching GLORY, you all should do the same.

Stephens v Swanson isn't a ppv fight, it is on Fox Sports.
If you don't like the card then don't watch it, no different than skipping Fox Saturday night baseball, ESPN Sunday night baseball game, Saturday night college football games, NBA Thursday night on TNT.

I think other orgs should follow suit. I can't wait for the NBA to merge the D league into their own and start showing 10-15 games per day, 7 days a week.

May as well throw the WNBA teams into the mix as well, since if you are a true basketball fan you will only care about the game played, not who is playing.

Does this sound stupid? Because that's the UFC market.

Did the UFC plants (usually there's 2-3 writing wall of texts) come in yet and support the pseudosport organization?

Imagine if the NBA added 30 expansion teams over the next two years, and then sent out a favored reporter to lecture the public about how true fans should appreciate the diminished quality of play. This sounds impossibly stupid, and yet it's more or less what's happening in one increasingly dim corner of the sports world.

Imagine if Major League Baseball scheduled over 4000 regular season games annually - the vast majority of which are basically meaningless.

Guys, I used to be one of those "hard core" fans. Used to watch every card, used to watch Pride at the same time. Used to know every upcoming match up and speculate on it.

Now there is too much junk to care. It's the equivalent of going to a buffet you used to eat at that had nice, luscious food all there for the picking. Then they said oh, people like our food, lets get more. Then they started bringing in EVERYTHING they could find, dumping treys of day old donuts on top of what used to be delicious onion rings, or sweet and sour chicken balls. They had a nice wonton soup, then they said lets cut it with water and add food coloring, and replace the dumplings with some old balled up bread. Lets get some cat meat and call it Fillet Meow, etc etc.

Would you still eat at this place?

How do you compare America's time honored tradition to what basically amounts to bar room brawling that approximately 0.1% of the world's population watches?

F level post.

I shouldn't have to watch a bunch of irrelevant fights to watch 1 relevant non title fight or try time the main event to catch the 1 fight of interest.....

Instead of having 1 or 2 great ppvs that attract fans are full of important fights and that truly shape the future of the sport, we get 17-20 completely shitty cards where there is only 1 fight for contention, 1 unproven prospect, and 10 fights that no one cares about between low level gatekeepers and rejects.

Then when ppvs do come along, the cards suck because the watchable talent has been used propping up a card with 11 irrelevant fights on it.....

This format isn't just hurting free TV.....its hurting ppv by thinning out the available talent for important events.....hence lower ppv buy rates....

Thank you. And if you don't like every band, you don't like music.

It's getting pretty late in the afternoon, the shills have probably logged off and began watching baseball or a real sport like golf, lawn bowling, darts etc.
