Deadlifts and milkshakes

10/24/2012

Felt really aggressive and strong today. I wanted to go for a paused PR at 115 but there was no one to spot me today.

ughhh, I am such a little wimp when it comes to pushing it without a spot. There were even people around, but they didn't look competent lol

Not making weight for the competition tomorrow. I'm a whopping 135 this morning pre-breakfast! So I'll be lifting in the 148 class. I wonder what my wilks score will be compared to Kyle's

This makes you my competitor.

USAPL Albany Strength Power lifting Championship

Okay, so today had to be one of most frustrating and best days of my life!
We got a VERY late start this morning to the meet. Steve set the alarm for an hour later than he was supposed to so we had to rush pretty quickly out of the house. We also got slightly off route on the way to the gym and arrived at the meet 10 minutes after weigh-ins. The guys at the desk told me it was too late for me to sign-in but luckily I have a friend who works there and let me in. She wasn’t happy with me though!

Weigh-ins
I weighed in exactly at 132 which I was not expecting. I ate like a pig the week leading up to this and my weight was fluctuating up until this point.

Squat
Warming up felt terrible. I was so nervous, even though I have done this so many times. My legs were shaking, my quads were fatigued from warming up with the bar. The nerves were ridiculous. I warmed up to some heavy singles. With one single, I missed the pins and the plates slid all over the place and I almost fell. A bunch of people had to come running over to help. My confidence was shot after that.

Opened at 155 – no lift due to depth and not listening to rack commands (big surprise). This really set the tone for the meet and it was hard to continue to stay motivated.
2nd attempt – 165 – good lift, felt pretty easy. +5 lb PR
3rd attempt – 175, no lift. Strained my back a little during the fail and just felt horrible after that.

Bench
Warm-ups felt awesome! My speed wasn’t all that great, but I felt really solid and everything was moving.

Opened with 105 – easy!

(Right before my second attempt, a guy is flinging his wrist wraps over his shoulder and the Velcro part got stuck in my hair. I kept walking not realizing and it started to pull on my hair making a tearing sound. I had to rip it out of my hair really hard and it took two people to help. It was soooo embarrassing. I mean, how does this even happen?!?!?!)

2nd attempt – 110, no lift. Confused as hell as to why this was so hard. I’ve done this for doubles in the gym.
3rd attempt – 110, no lift. See above.

I got pretty upset after this. My two lifts that I was expecting to make some big PRs on had gone horribly. Steve had to talk me into staying at the meet, I just wanted to go home. I knew I wasn’t going to be making any progress on the deadlift so I didn’t feel it was worth staying. However, Steve wouldn’t allow me to leave and you’ll find out why later :D

Deadlift
Got an INTENSE energy drink. Felt like my heart was going to pop out of my chest. My mood improved significantly haha. Warm-ups felt awesome, but I ended up changing my opener from 225 to 215 just to build some confidence in my pull.
Opened at 215 – easy
2nd attempt – 235, no lift, got out in front of me.
3rd attempt – 235, ugly but got it.

Finished with a 505 total. I am extremely disappointed. I know I am good for more. I have never trained for something so hard or thought about something so much. Preparing for this meet took a lot of sacrifice and energy and I was just expecting more results. I can’t wait to get back into training. I will probably test these numbers again soon in the gym.

Proposal
Finally, the meet ended. I got 3rd place and after the coordinator of the event announced the winners and handed out the trophies, he said there was something special happening at the meet. Steve suddenly stands up, hands our digital camera to a random guy, and walks to the front of the gym and gets the microphone. He calls me up to him and says that I shine the most when I’m teaching and when I’m in the gym and he felt this was the appropriate place to ask. He got on his knee, and asked me to marry him. You’ll see footage of this at the end of my video. I’m crying hysterically and in complete shock!! I am so happy and so surprised still! What a whacky day of emotions. Oh, and you’re all invited. :P

Cliff notes: My lifts sucked with a 505 total. Got my hair stuck in someone’s wrist wraps. Got proposed to at the end of the meet.

I'm so glad this engagement news is distracting people from how horrible my lifting was today haha

I know that I will do better next time. I just feel like I make way too many mistakes in competition. Steve now calls me the 'red light queen' because I tend to miss about 50% of my attempts. I have so much to work on and I plan on using this disaster to remind me what I need to focus on in training.

I did it! I beat him! Congratulations to you guy, we left a really dorky message on your machine, WC, and you and I should do some fb'ing sometime soon!
