Deadlifts and milkshakes

Notes: First time using my new stuff. I LOVED the belt and I think I will get a lot out of it. The slingshot however was confusing as all hell to me. The only way I can explain the feeling was that it was "stuck" at a certain point and I could neither press it up because it was too far back nor lower it because it wasn't heavy enough. My shoulder has also been feeling a little tweaked lately. I'm falling apart! Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to do any assistance today either.

Oftentimes, the first time people use a bench shirt, their bench press goes down, not up, because they can't touch at the bottom. That's basically the problem you've come across; the material is probably too advanced for your press.

The good thing about using this sort of gear for bench pressing is that it teaches you to "row" the weight down. But, as you've found out, you can have too much of a good thing.

I would consider hanging onto it and continuing to use it intermittently. When people break in gear for bench pressing, they typically start with high board pressing and work their way down over a few weeks. You could do the same with a slingshot, though I don't know in all honestly how much you can "break it in". Start with a three-board, see if you can touch the boards with it on, and then work down to smaller boards from there. If you don't have boards, you can be resourceful (I've used books--Nietzsche and Marx are my three-boards). It could become, for you, an overload assistance exercise that would help you with your lockout; in other words, something you'd do selectively when you feel you need some really heavy triceps assistance.

Do you think she benches enough to overcome the resistance of the slingshot? I personally have never used one, so I have no idea.

Alright, I'll test the boards/books out and maybe I'll even film it next time. I was expecting that I was going to have trouble lowering it, but didn't know it would be that out of control. I wanted to add more weight to see if that would help, but I was too much of a wimp.

Well, I don't know what type of slingshot she has, but I thought the less intense ones would provide maybe 75 lbs. in assistance at the bottom, whereas some can give 100+. So, she might have to overload her bench press a bit to get it to touch, but it's not like she'd have to overload it by THAT much (they're nothing like most bench shirts nowadays), and if you're going to use a slingshot, it'd be to overload your bench press anyway, so she wouldn't be doing anything out of the ordinary.

WC, when you press with it, you're going to end up using more than your regular max, but you would really be well advised to test it out, if you can, in a power rack with pins set up. Just handling and lowering something above your max is going to be taxing for you, and any sort of gear will make it harder to stabilize the weight if you aren't accustomed to it. You can use a spotter, but when you're testing this out, things can go bad in a hurry, and you don't want to eat a barbell because your spotter wasn't able to react fast enough.

The question I have is if she has the strength and speed on her pressing to overcome the discrepancy between assistance at the top and bottom for an overloaded slingshot, since we're probably talking about a 75-100 lb. difference, which is not that far from her actual max an thus an enormous percentage. The answer, I'm guessing, is no, so it would make more sense to use it for board pressing, at least to start. That way, it will be easier to touch, and the assistance won't be as intense, since she won't be reaching her chest.

WC, I would just film it next time, and make sure you're working with someone you trust, preferably in a power rack. Do them with some sort of board or substitute (maybe 2-3" to start), but make sure the slingshot goes under it, or else the board might just get in the way and pull it up your arms. Warm up, then start with your current max + board and slingshot, and work up from there. If you can't get it to work and feel like you're going to kill yourself, call it quits.

It's the reactive sling shot and the description says "it will work for a lifter who benches 75 pounds to a big meat head who wants to bench 600."

Goon spotted me and always does (I don't trust anyone else lol) and he said that my elbows were too close and being pulled in by the slingshot, basically on my ribs. Maybe that is my problem, although I didn't notice it myself.

Congrats on the rep PR :)

I have no clue what a sling shot is, as far as I'm concerned it's a way to hit people with rocks.

This is what I assume they are talking about.

Jesus witchcraft, you have a harem of boys in here

I literally just burst out laughing, people are looking at me weird :D

My milkshakes bring all the boys to my log.

No, it's because SLING SHOT IT'S A BEST.

At least I'm not hitting on a girl almost twice my age.

Hurt your knee in bed? Sounds.....sexy...:)

Dude, being twice someone's age on here makes me feel old. I'm only 23!

Anyways, back to real training stuff.

I wanted to set a press PR today but I'll be going to a New Year's party instead. Tomorrow!

But for now...I'd like to write my goals for 2012. I tried to make them realistic and attainable this year.

Lifting goals:
Dead: 245
Squat: 165
Bench: 135
OHP: 100
Get BW to 140
Add at least 100 pounds to my PL total in a meet

Personal goals:
Maintain a 4.0 GPA in grad school (lol at this being realistic)
Obtain (as Maiou would call it) "a noteworthy ass" through training
Learn to juggle
Do a handstand

Happy New Years everyone. Hope it's a strong and healthy 2012 for all.

What are you going to grad school for?

note: I hit on all girls under 30 who are in shape, mostly just jokingly. I actually look 20, so this habit has gotten me in trouble occasionally:eek:
