The dean of mean was a much more accurate comparison. The way they figured out cruz was to let him keep injuring himself until he slows down.I get the awkwardness but very, very different. Machida was probably the closest thing to Cruz at MW and LHW with his footwork, movement and unusual technical striking. But Cruz wasn't karate-based. He just combined striking/grappling well along with some very fast, unpredictable footwork.
DDP is more like a combination of Keith Jardine (herky jerky movement), Yoel (lunging power shots followed by lulls in activity) and Jiri.
They STILL struggle with karate fighters like MVP.
