DC's plan for Jones

His best plan is to hope Jon rips his toe off and the ref stops it

DC being "on another level" doesn't seem to help him dictate where the fight goes against Jones shockingly.

Who dictated where the fight went when Jones fought Gus? Who landed more TDs? I know know you can eventually understand this. Good luck!

if DC really said that, he is delusional. Undoubtly it will be Cormiers hardest fight in his career again. But over the last few days I had the feeling DC would win in the rematch. I think DC fought well against Jones in their first match. But he also made some stupid silly decisions. Decisions like throwing that stupid slow awkward kick in the first round. If DC doesnt make stupid decisions like that he could very well beat Jones (if Jones fights similar to how he fought on saturday). But hearing him say stupid things like this, makes me go back to favouring Jones again.

What do you call this wrestling move?

That's called the "fat guys shouldn't kick TD".

Funny how before he was saying that he wasn't going to focus on the takedowns. He is trying to get into his head.

It's a total Fitch move...fucking AKA...

LOL, in Bones' entire career, how many times have you ever seen his guard? Ever? Nobody has ever put Bones on his back.

Fighters typically don't spell out their tactics to the opponent during press events, do they? If anything, it's an opportunity to misdirect.

There a couple of obvious improvements that DC needs to make to win. If he doesn't, I think that the chances are that he'll lose in similar fashion:

1. Check, counter Jones' kicks.
2. Counter Jones' knees in the clinch.

Taking the former away from Jones would be a huge win for DC given how much Jones has grown accustomed to dictating with his kicks and also given how prone he seems to injuring his feet, shins - a guy diligently checking Jones' roundhouse kicks would shut that shit down very fast IMO.

Can he do it? DC has shown to be a very quick learner and his current skillset makes me believe that he can pick up these techniques quickly. Learning to deal with the oblique kick in particular is easy but if Cormier doesn't do his homework and the fight mostly takes place at range, Jones will ruin him with that move. I think that the amount of times he used that kick vs OSP is an obvious tell that it will be one of his go-to moves for DC.

Jones caught 6'3" OSP's kick just like that. He'll grab kicks and it bothers me because of these days he is going to misjudge it and take one in the head.

Game plan: push the pace and pressure. Get in the clinch and jam with uppercuts. Mix it with the threat of tds. This time he should also employ kicks. Avoid eye pokes and oblique kicks and he should be fine.

He pushed the pace last fight, that is why he won a round, but it caused him to gas out and get beaten.

Catching the middle kick is a very basic technique in MT. If done right, it isn't especially dangerous. Of course, if a fighter isn't good at reading his opponent's strikes, anything will be dangerous to him.

Jones proved in the first fight was a better wrestler. Credentials be damned.

Yea in MMA there are some guys that credentials don't really apply to. GSP has no credentials at all. Bones only wrestled a little bit in high school I think. Its hard to wrestle in MMA if the other guy is kicking you and punching you and doesn't really want to wrestle. So then it comes down to who can impose their style on the other. In the case of Jones, he imposes his style exceptionally well.

Maybe, but maybe not. Look, he had short notice for OSP and Greg Jackson needed to reduce the risk of Jones getting flash KO'ed by a large fighter with KO power in his hands, left particularly. He knew Jones was a year and a half out from his last bout and probably concluded that it would be best to stay at range and away from OSP's hands. OSP likes to counter when fighters overextend themselves, Shogun being an example. Jones wasn't having any of it, the best technique he has to keep fighters away from him is the oblique kick.

People are posting in other threads the best thing to do is check that oblique but what happens when you check a kick? You raise your leg and that stops your forward momentum. The entire point of Jones throwing them to begin with, to stop your forward momentum towards him. So either way, check them, don't check them, the end result is what Jon wants, to stop your forward momentum.

Good plan, it only took him 8 tries and 24 minutes to take Jones down once and keep him down for one second.

Exactly! Cormier tried and none of it worked. That leverage is always going to favor Bones who's a damn good wrestler himself.

gus took him down twice, cormier once....no?

None of the take downs against Jones ever lasted more than a few seconds. Nobody has ever landed in Jones guard and held him there.

DC has zero advantages in this fight other than punching power. Jones is better at range, better in the clinch, better mma wrestling, better cardio, better bjj. Can't see how DC wins.

That's called a trip. Jones has nasty trips. Watch him use one on Rashad and throw him like a paperweight.

He had no Cain help during camp plus it was a bad weight cut. This time the odds are with dc. Who knows what Jon was on during the first fight.

Well, its possible. I'm going to have to see it to believe it though. Bones is a savage.

That's all AKA does. Train to out work their opponents. Fitch does it. Cain does it. DC does. The only major finisher they have these days is Rockhold. And DC can finish too. But it seems like trying to knock Jones out or submit him is off the table. How about train to do that. Instead of crushing your knees with leg raise burn out exercises?

Gus took Jones down more than once by Jones` own words (I know official stats say only 1).

I'm not talking official stats, I think they are garbage. Half of the "takedowns" in Khabibs record breaking performance were mat returns.

Jones probably said that because he's so conditioned by Greg Jackson on MMA judges who are ignorant about wrestling, but it's a problem imo and gives wrestling a worse rep for being boring than it deserves
