that's my point, nobody really seems to care either way.
the reason it worked for Conor is because Conor was an actual threat.

He gains exposure every time.
He makes a better living off that exposure whether he's in regional shows, the UFC, or as a Jiu Jitsu coach.
You say nobody cares but he is nearing a million followers. That's a lot. And he has plenty of haters who care too.
