I'm wondering if it's an attempt by Dan to bait Ilia into a fight with him. (Not saying it would work, but Ilia would be a high profile name for Dan and he just had to pull out of a fight with a high profile name in Gaethje). Maybe just a hail mary by Hooker angling for a big name fight.

This is something I see often and fundamentally disagree with fighters about.

I'm not a fighter but.. if I was ... I would want all of my opponents to succeed.

If you beat me, I would want to have lost to a great fighter, so I would want you to do great things.

If I beat you, I would want you to have a great career so that win looks great on my record.

When you tear them down, like you said, you are saying
"hey beating us wasn't something special"

instead of
"wow you must really have some talent there and if you could beat me, you may go on to do great things.... hopefully I see you at the top and get it back one day."

I agree but also you need to look it from a different perspective.
They are in the entertainment business.
If they all were saying that this guy and this guy is great the fans would get bored to death.
Being nice doesn't sell anything these days.
But if you say that this elite guy you are about to face is a tomato can and that you are going to crush it in the first round then people suddenly start to pay attention since you just made a bold statement that will either make you a Mystic Mac or a meme.

I think you're giving Hooker too much credit. Big fan of him as a fighter, but the guy shouldn't be given a platform. Hes just trying to back his guys, but he makes them all look silly by association.
