Even though I'm a die hard Couture Fan, I still see TOney pulling off the upset and opening to doors to a new era of $hit talking by James Toney.
Again, I agree. Good post.
At first I thought to myself that James Toney is just about the worst famous boxer under the age of 50 that could possibly be used as an MMA crossover, because he’s all wrong for the skills transfer. He’s a natural super-middleweight, primarily a stationary, head movement oriented defensive specialist, very old, always one to overestimate his abilities and place in the sport, clearly getting somewhat punch drunk at this point, and doesn’t carry his middleweight power up that much into to higher weight divisions.
As wrong as you could find.
Obviously, that’s what the UFC matchmaking team thought too.
After what fat, sick and just as old Ray Mercer did to one of their greatest champions (who’s recent 3 fights show he’s still in his prime), who on earth could blame them.
But James has me convinced now. I think he’ll know how to make this into a fight and keep it away at all times from becoming a grappling match, and he’ll put a horrible beating on a guy who’s never in his life faced somebody who can beat a person down like James Toney can.
As it was for Mercer when he was insulted by the rules suddenly being changed on him, James Toney is pissed at this cartoonish “MMA lifestyle” culture having grown up over the past few years and leaving respect for standup guys like him behind.
The UFC fandom and it’s self stroking “media” have placed a big chip on Toney’s shoulder, for sure.
I think Randy is about to walk into a meat grinder.
From Zuffa's perspective of course, that’s perfect.
They couldn’t get then world champ Fedor for Randy so Randy, ever the gladiator went after Fedor without them & their cheap belt, but the UFC succeeded in their injunction against that, and dragged Couture back to work like an escaped slave.
They’ve obviously got no issue with throwing Randy Couture under a bus, and own the licensing for his name and likeness for life; so having him lose badly to James Toney in order to set up subsequent opportunities for the UFC/MMA to regain it’s status through revenge matches against Mirko, Nog, Mir, Shane, Junior, Cain, or Heavens to Murgatroyd, Brock Lesner??
Those shows would put the PPV buys through the roof!
Imagine the promotion…….. “UFC 132…..Get that loud ******!”
If Couture is a smart fighter (which he is) he will employ his strengths and attempt to neutralize his opponents strengths and expose his opponents weaknesses. He will most likely attempt to take Toney down immediately.
I agree that Randy is going to do everything in his power to make this a wrestling match on the ground, but getting Toney into a clinch against the fence will only invite a 9” uppercut that will drop Couture like a rock; and long, low double leg takedowns are not his thing.
The well intended lock up and throw will become lock up and sleep.
I think that no matter what Randy decides to do to face his problem, the next day all the fan boys will be saying “He’s washed up anyway” and “He was focused on doing that movie”, as the credibility of the UFC and all of it’s fighters leaves the building for all but the most ardent fans.
To quote the infamous Lee Murray, Couture will "shoot from the locker room." Hell yeah Couture will take this fight down. Right off the bat. And he'll put Toney on his back and that will be the end of it.
There is no evidence in existence that suggests that a shoot, and particularly one from a Greco-Roman wrester (as opposed to a Freestyle wrestler, lol) works most of the time against someone with world class boxing skills.
If you know of an example, I’m all ears.
Naturally, anything can happen and there’s a first time for everything, but the mechanics of it work like this:
A punch travels about 4 to 6 times the speed of the very fastest shoot. Its thigh and calf muscle pushing 200 pounds forward vs. shoulder and arm muscles moving a fist.
When the punch is being thrown by anyone not good enough to make a living at it, that speed differential isn’t very important.
But when a real, honest to God pro boxer is the one throwing the punch, there is an excellent chance that it will land where intended and end the fight immediately once it gets there; and it so happens that there is evidence in existence of that.
If Randy Couture can find a way to increase the speed of his takedown to x4 as fast as any takedown in history, and he can do it before Friday, he’ll win.
If he can’t, then by being a wrestler in a fight, he’ll find that he’s brought a slingshot to a tank battle.
Soon enough, we'll see.
