Television Dads in cartoons are idiots

Its important to give a character a weakness, a man that's competent, intelligent and well paid can only be a supporting character at best imo.
I agree and as an example you have Greg from Steven Universe. He's a good dad but happy-go-lucky and careless sometimes - that's his weakness.

Arguably, Fred Flintstone is a decent dad but should really get in shape and face his anger issues.

But with a guy like Peter Griffin it's 100% disaster. It's so bad it's not funny.

Most cartoons and all older toons are written for the perspective of kids. What kid wants to watch a show where the alpha dad knows all the answers, needs no help and the kid just follows his lead. Oh, and ...

Very good point, and the reverse is evident in live action sitcoms from that era (adult target audience) where the father is a wise and benevolent hegemon:

Mr Drummond from Diff'rent Strokes
Dad from Family Ties
Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince
Huxtable from Cosby Show
Dad from Family Matters
Growing Pains
Original Beverly Hills 90210
Good Times
Silver Spoons
etc. etc.

BTW Mask was a solid cartoon but I didn't realize till much later that the guys are just wearing stylized welding masks except for the guy with a scuba mask with rebreather. Also, Miles Mayhem is a cartoon version of Frank Reagan from Blue Bloods.

We've been over this. English is not my 1st language. This is how I've been taught to refer to babies. I've corrected the post. Why are you still nagging me about this?

As for Daddy Pig...

I'm with you on Daddy Pig being a useless putz in the cartoons and the books. My kids like the book "George's New Dinosaur," but every time I read it to them, it's grating how useless the guy is. At home he's just sitting his fat ass in an easy chair eating Cheetos or something. To his credit, he takes the family to the toy store to buy a new dinosaur but then he's a complete tool about playtime rules. And when Peppa finds the broken off tail of the old dinosaur (the one George really likes), he waffles about how hard it will be to fix until his fat ass realizes the tail just snaps back into place.

Dude but we have Mando as the best space dad ever.

Even if his son is adopted.

I always thought Mayhem looked like Saddam Hussein lol.

It’s usually for “punching up”. Someone needs to be the butt of jokes and it’s tougher to make it the mother.

LOL I can see that one too, but the blue police commissioner uniform was definitely channeling future Tom Selleck although in the first pic he looks more like Dan Severn. In the cartoon he alternates between being merely "big boned" and as fat as Daddy Pig:

Fred Flintstone wasnt portrayed as lazy
He was a well paid machine operator that also had a pretty active social life outside of work

Fred was one of the good ones.

I like dexters dad too, but he was a total horndog for the mom. Can't blame him either.

Great call on Severn. I can’t believe I never noticed that!

Atticus Finch is your sort of archetypal “good father” but those stories are harder to write. If you need some easy comedy a well meaning but dumb person is your ticket.

Uncle Phil kind of follows the Atticus Finch model
