Nature & Animals Cue the cat lonely old spinster comments

That cat's fur pattern makes it look like she has a black eye.

Could that have contributed to you feeling sorry for her?

Also, you gotta trap that mother cat and get her fixed, or this cycle will never end. Take it from someone with 3 adopted strays
I'm on my 5h stray, can't really count the other 2 because they were shelter kitties. After this litter of hers I think I'm going to have to. She will go literally round the bend she's so feral though, see how it plays out. Next door have the 2 brothers rehabbing in their garage so maybe they'll do the same with Momma and obviously we'll split the bill. I could do with fixing the dad as well but my God what a horrid life he's had already.

I have three kittens all close to same age (about 8 months) and I think shots and fixing was $1500 for all 3. Nothing is cheap anymore but some things just seem astronomical!
The shelter will only fix strays you release back out or if you get them from the shelter. We have literally one vet unless you want to travel 2 hours so they have us over a barrel really. I mean Emmy was chipped, blood work, pain meds and all her jabs for the $1100 but we couldn't NOT get her done with the potential cancer problems.

I thought you said the thing's name was Cali?

I bet she turns into a lap cat.
Gunner and Rocket are both my lap cats so as lovely as she is that would cause more problems haha.

She proper loves the sweet spot behind the ear and under her chin, lots of purrs.

hahah yeah I can see lap contention is an issue in your house then.
those are pretty reliable petting spots. my last cat also really liked getting scratched on her back near the tail.

$1100 to get the cat fixed?

Everything medical in my part of California seems like a financial grab whether it be vet or human healthcare, I had all manner of ops/x rays/consultations done in NorCal and apart from insurance didn't spend a penny.
Nothing I could do about it, she was in heat and not getting her fixed considering the health benefits cancer wise wasn't taking the risk.

Yup. Private equity firms are buying up all the veterinary clinics because they know people love their pets and will pay whatever the cost.

So fixing a cat used to be like $250 just a couple years ago, but once they own the majority of the clinics in your area then they'll jack up the prices. It's even worse for you being in California and in a town with only one vet.

That's why it's so important to get that mama cat fixed, because if you don't, you'll be getting all her kittens fixed every year until you're in the poor house or you just give up trying to care for them.

She's a cutie. Vet charges have risen to insane heights and God forbid if you need help after hours. We took one of our older pups to the emergency vet one night last year and they required a $2,000 payment up front before they would even take him back for examination. You have a good heart, gal.

You really are preaching to the choir, I can't disagree with anything you've said. I know it's doing her a favour in the long run. I can't house her so if next door will rehab her in the garage then between us it's a no brainer...I know it all makes sense. My step dad even said the same and he's isn't particularly an animal lover. I'm going to end up in tears rescuing more and more of her kittens.
Anything I make and sell 10% goes to the shelter so I have a good relationship with them and they're a shedload cheaper than the VCA vet. I don't want to lie to them about Cali but next door have already paid for her to be spayed. I've also just signed up to do an event for the shelter in April so don't know whether to come clean that she's now my cat and not a feral I'm trapping and releasing.

I remember taking a pet mouse to the vet in England at 1Am and it only costing the equivalent of $120ish. Our nearest 24 hour is 2 hours away, the local one are 9-5 M-F so if anything goes wrong we're miles away on a Saturday night.

The dream is to win the billions on the lottery and build a sanctuary/vet/rehab for all animals. Burros and pigs are frequently discarded here or just driven to the desert when feeding them becomes too much so giving them a nice life as well as the cat and dog feral problem here.

At some point you gotta just let nature takes its course with these cats constantly making more cats however that works out with nature is just natural. Unless they are dogs, then everyone should adopt a dog.

Yeah I wish I could be like that, not care. It would save a lot of sleepless nights and tears. My first strays I think I was 4 and animals in distress is probably my worst thing...that I can do something about.

Since both of you are familiar with cats' spots, I have a new and surprising thing to ask you about.

So every cat in my life male or female has had a natural reflex when you pet the bottom of the spine into the tail area where their bavk legs straighten and they stand taller. Past couple months I've noticed with two lady cats they don't have this reflex at all, not even a bit.

They still like being pet there, but this was surprising to me, either of you ever see this?
