The bizarre misplaced blame for political reasons is why judges go draconian so often. It really would help if society didn't think the solution is lock everybody up indefinitely.

Real cime deterrence starts with education and prevention. Recidivism is unavoidable in a prison system that isn't designed to rehabilitate. Our prison systems have become little more than money-makers and privatized prisons are even worse.

It isn't even practical or feasible to keep everybody locked up. Of course you gotta do early release for non-violent if you want room for the more serious criminals.

This kind of thing happens on everybody's watch and overcrowding has been a problem for decades. The U.S. has more people locked up per capita and the largest prison population in the world. And close to half is non-violent drug offenses.

I would like to see all suicide hotlines disbanded, I want to nut punch some asshole trying to talk some guy off a ledge, I want a society full of people who are so addicted to a drug that they would steal from their own mothers and kill strangers just to get enough money for the next hit. This can only be good for society.

there is more to that. alot of drugs are amazingly addictive and destructive. if someone gets hooked it's a little more than just "they're an adult and that's what they want to do with themselves, what else can you do?".

people get hooked and it often starts a downward spiral that ruins their life that they can't control or stop from happening.
