Television COWBOY BEBOP Live-Action Series - 12/9 Update: Canceled by Netflix

It's the generalization of "anime" as whole same thing one like or not, wich usually seems pretty a cultural american thing.
To me sounds like i "dislike sea places" as if polynesia and iceland are same shit because "sea" lol

There's a general over the top and zany(nonsensical a lot of the time) style to anime, that turns people off. It varies from show to show of course, but when you hear "anime" you get a picture of what to expect.

The race of the characters was mostly ambiguous tbh.

I watched about five episodes. It was better than I thought it would be, but five episodes in its… fading. The longing isn’t there, and the set design is lacking. Spike has been made a bit goofy; they def reimagined him, taking away his brokenness and replacing it with a more talkative bounty hunter who actually gets along with people. Jett is actually done really well. Faye isn’t all that great.

again, not bad. Cho has been better than expected. The backstories don’t seem to add much though.

Just finished, I liked it a lot more than I thought. I completely bought into Cho as Spike. I always thought it was funny how people play Spike up as this ultra cool, suave dude. To me he was always someone who thought he was much cooler than he was. An often doofus who was constantly the butt of jokes. John Cho did really well imo. He was funny, aloof, someone we could laugh at ultimately get behind. I did find it a little funny when some of the female characters were talking about how sexy he was (John Cho is a good looking guy but far from a sex symbol).

I also really enjoyed the chemistry between Spike and Jet. The direction they went to flesh Jet out more was fine and added a bit more depth to the character. Mustafa Shakir was a gruff dude with a code that played well off Cho. I liked his character.

Wasn’t a big fan of Faye. Out of the three main cast members she felt most out of place to me. Amusing at times, annoying and cringy for the most part.

The changes to the story were hit or miss but I’m glad they’re doing their own thing with it. Don’t need a beat for beat remake. I definitely wasn’t a fan of the ending but I’m open to see where they take it. (Was super stoked to see Ed. I think it’s funny how people want something identical to the anime and this was by far the most accurate portrayal and they’re put off by it).

The fight/action scenes were the biggest head scratchers for me. It was everywhere from bad to great at times, but mostly mediocre. The speed needed to be picked up quite a bit. I appreciate that they didn’t go for a disorienting quick cut where you have no idea what’s going on and wanted to show as much as they could, and some of it was beautifully shot and executed, but for the most part it was meh at best.

Overall though I was entertained throughout and enjoyed it for what it was and I’m definitely looking forward to season 2. If the anime is a 10 I’d give this a 7 or so.

Edit: shit, completely forgot about the soundtrack. I loved it, absolutely fantastic.

I always pictured him as black.

Why aren't you asking why Spike Spiegel is Asian now?
Tbh Jet is worse lol

Made less controversy just because unlike Spike he is'nt the main protagonist and did'nt had a particular loss of coolness. He just casting that ignored source (and no, before anybody say it "but english dub" make no sense lol), so who did'nt cared about get loyal casting are'nt bothered

Btw if i was the one doing casting for Spike would have picked probably some half white half asian actor, they have the right look for him and could still pass as a "Spike Spiegel"

Guess there's no point drag the thread more on netflix style shit casting thing, but let's be real it's hard pick where they fucked it up the most lol

In Ein we trust

Spike and Jet were passable. They did better than I expected. Faye was absolutely abysmal though. “Hey dick wads, dick holes.” Etc. That was a whole different character.

Final grade: C-, almost a D+ but a few laughs and decent music saved it.

Spike isn’t the same from the original. I’m fine with changing plot points around, adding or subtracting characters, but to change him into a sort-of goofy assassin, who kills people
children too
and believes in teamwork, kind of takes away from what made the original so interesting in the first place. This isn’t Cho’s fault, either. It’s the writing. John exceeded expectations as far as being a martial artist and weapons expert.

Faye was not good. Retooling stories is needed after 20+ years, I think, and the last time I watched the original — years ago — I definitely felt a lot could be shifted and/or flushed out. The Faye Valentine story wasn’t very good, no matter what they have in store.

Jett, despite what people are saying here, was good. The actor nailed the character. The new backstory… meh. The best episode of the original was when he went back and saw his old flame, saving her, and then symbolically throwing the watch into the bay. Now he has a kid and an ex.

Part of what brought Bebop together was the sameness of their individual despair. Not to over analyze a cartoon. We’ve had a long time to think about the live action Bebop, and this was something.

Ed was brutal. Not sure I could sit through much more of Ed.

Julia
piece of shit addition imo. Kind of the flailing of the show writers. Again, this is something new, but if you were a fan of the original, you have to scratch your head at her changes.

Just watched the first episode and loved the Robert Rodriguez/Desperado vibe

They completely butchered Vicious and Julia.

Faye is a joke.

The dialogue is the cringiest shit ever, it's like a 13 year old wrote it.

The whole thing feels like a porn parody.

If I owned the rights to Cowboy Bebop, I would sue Netflix for devaluing the franchise in such a disgraceful way.

I'm about 2/3 through and Faye is horrible as everyone else has said. Jett and Spike are solid though.

I don't see how this could appeal to anyone that never watched the anime previously though. I, and I believe most others, are watching it for the hopes they don't butcher it too much. The story is terribly set up and I don't give a shit about the characters if I think about this as separate from the anime.

That sucks. I actually didn't think it was bad and I was hoping for a 2nd season.
