Couture vs Nogueira

Lol he was 46

By that logic Fedor is still in his prime
That is a silly, reductionist way to think about an MMA fighters Prime.

A male's physical prime occurs generally between age's 25-30 and you are starting to come off that after.

But that does not mean that is their MMA prime. You MMA prime is where your physical abilities and MMA fight game meet at their highest point of performance.

So Anderson Silva started in the UFC at age 30 and his MMA game (particularly his ability to defend the ground game) was getting better and better. HIs MMA Prime came later.

If a new Randy Couture type enters MMA today at age 35 having never trained but having a great wrestling resume, his MMA prime will come after some training and knowledge even if his physical condition is slightly less. He will be more in his fight Prime at ages 36, 37 and so on as his MMA knowledge and fight game improve.

Def some banana peels in there <36>
Randy has always left himself open when he boxed and he never corrected that stupid move what an idiot

Randy was 46 and Nogs win over an old man was embarrassing for mma.

Would've been interesting to see if a prime Randy would've been able to deal with Nog's BJJ, because no doubt prime Couture takes him down multiple times

Honestly I think Randy benefited from the fight happening when it did grappling wise, by this point Nog was really quite significantly slower and I think that really is what allowed Randy to survive on the ground with him.

Standing I think Nog had also lost more than Randy by this point speed wise even if he was younger although I spose you could argue that maybe evened itself out a bit more as the striking turning into a slower brawl meant his superior chin played a part.

I think it really does show you as well that someone like Nog's power was significant underrated simply because he was either fighting guys with great chins and/or great defence in Pride most of the time.

I loved, this fight, especially the back n forth...bug nos 4 pumch body head combo was special. I liked his subs attempts too

People forget how chinny Randy was especially towards the end of his carrer and even though Nog lost to Mir in the rematch he was destroying him. Would've been better in their prime, both fighters were out of it, but Nog had more.

I enjoyed the fight a lot. At the time I did consider it one of my favorite HW fights. Nowadays I'm not sure. But one of the main reasons why I liked it so much was because I was uncertain how Big Nog was going to be after the Mir loss and was surprised to see how good he looked.

Also, lol at people arguing about who was more out of prime. Both were coming off a loss and while not on huge losing streaks I think both were showing signs of being past it. Both guys after this fight did not do super well (Big Nog 2-5, Couture 3-1). Age isn't the only indicator of being in prime and same as number of fights. Mileage from fights + training camps, injuries, fight syle, genetics etc. all play a role and for some they will hit their wall earlier or later than others.

Couture was 46 and it was sad seeing an old man fighting in a cage.

Nog was certainly younger but was falling off incredibly fast. Randy had a great extended twilight of his career. I think they were about equally post-prime.

Regardless, it was great seeing how their skills and styles matched up. That was more intriguing than the ultimate outcome.

They were both a little past it but to me this felt like an epic fight for the ages. One of the few times where both the fight itself and the story are amazing.

I generally agree with that logic when you're talking about guys in their late 30's... but age does eventually matter, and 46 is ridiculously old.

Randy's MMA debut was at 34yo tho. He doesn't have the same age curve of the avg fighter he's an outlier like Yoel, DC etc
