Apparently US Government specifically the Military has been dumping 100's of millions of dollars to researchers working on Quantum Computers. Australian researchers where the first to make a quantum computer chip out of Silicon instead of get this diamond material that is used in the D-Wave Quantum Computer. Their chip is also closer to a general purpose machine VS D-Wave that has a limited focus.

The biggest benefit is ease to manufacture the quantum gates in the end now that they figured out how to do it makes it much easier to produce the chips. The Government is paying 11 million to D-Wave systems to train their researchers how to program the machine even though it's not the perfect solution for many different sets of problems.

But the biggest worry for the US Government is Chinese efforts with Quantum computers. The Chinese much like the US has largely left the world of general purpose supercomputers instead have opted to work the new generation of quantum computers skipping optical computing right to quantum computing.

The US for whatever reason has not been able to produce a significant quantum computer with general purpose registers and more than a few Q-Bits of logic. The Chinese have been apparently working on larger scale quantum computers with error checking. Little is known of their efforts other than what they have talked about in public. But what they have spoken about has made the Government press scientists from around the world to work on Quantum computing technology.

What do Sherdoggers think about this problem is the US losing its edge in Research.

Who is to say the US government and military complex is forthcoming about their own research in supercomputing?

Reason being is their own personal reactions to developments in China. In the past there was little if any money spent to outside organizations like the millions spent to Australian researchers or 11 million to teach researchers in the US how to program quantum computers. It's not unusual for them not to be forthcoming about their work but this has a different feel to it like they are concerned about how far along are the Chinese.

Is it really about being ahead, or more about letting the other guy do the work, and then you just copy him.

I think the Chinese are more effective than ever in research on a large scale like developing a quantum computer.

lol it's been that way for the Chinese. But I think they've built up enough infrastructure to start discovering stuff on their own and they have been impressive in the cyber warfare department.

What I wonder about sometimes, is will someone like the Chinese discover a kind of hardware that can make them challenge America in a big way. Look at how beaten the Germans were after WW1 and then BAM! All of those U-boats.

The top tech minds in the US probably don't want to work for the government and opt for private industry instead.

Working for the government, you gotta lead a pristine life, can't smoke pot, can't be a bro, gotta go to an office, gotta do a straight 9-5, have to wear a suit and tie, have to deal with bureaucracy.... it just sounds super gay.

In any case I recently talked to a guy who works high up in a big German Industrial Goods company (World market leader in their segment). He said the Chinese have been copying their product for decades. But now they are getting better, to the point where they actually are able to build a superior product in some cases.

Give it 10 or 15 years but the Chinese will do it.

Why bother when they can just let another country like America spend the big money and time needed to move ahead and then just steal the blueprint and make their own ersatz version?

They are big into espionage and behind the scenes tech transfers also so a lot of it is being funneled over there through corruption and backroom deals.

It's far more efficient to acquire tech than it is to re-invent the wheel.

They are also nationalist in terms of working with Western corporations in that in order to do business in the Chinese market a lot of the time the tech has to go into Chinese hands.

They are playing to win.

Why don't we work with the Chinese on this future technology and. Ring the world closer together.

Perhaps we can tackle space travel with the Chinese if we worked together.

Maybe you are unaware of how much Chinese disregards the PCT

Working together is always good, but at the same time the world is in a constant state of power struggle.

And that's why the world is crappy. I think things like technology and space travel can unite the world.

They can to some extent, but it won't stop power struggles.

A common threat would do a lot more to unite everyone. We need start an intergalactic war :D

I think space exploration is something that could be used unify the world.

Well first you brought up QC - not sure why any country would want to work with China - who is notorious for stealing and remaking other states intellectual property rights. Who would want to voluntarily give them access source codes?

Also, China is pretty far behind space travel - their goal is to hit the moon in 20 years...hell, they will just complete their space station when the ISS is scheduled to end its life cycle. If anything, the US and Europe should continue a relationship until China can prove it can keep up and not steal technology.
