Opinion ***Could Direct Democracy Work Today***

Could it work in the sense of being implementable? Yes. With intelligent identity checking systems and availability of high speed internet a reliable system could be implemented.

Would it work well? No. Most people are too stupid to understand complex issues. Hell, they actively vote against their own interest because of what they hear on the TV.

Now, if we created a system that would require:
1. IQ testing.
2. Increased the age requirement for voters to 25/30.
3. Familiarising yourself with the act being voted on, evidenced by a quiz.

Then it would work and allow us to create the best country in the world.
I'm glass half full

I dont think you understand what direct democracy is. There wouldn't be elections. There wouldn't be left and right.

Your president trump is the one that is trampling all over rule of law.

Yes, there would be Left and Right... and you still need to elect leadership to administrate. You can't vote on every minute item.

Are we sure today's politicians are in the 10% intelligence wise

We hear all the time and resign to the fact that politicians on both side are corrupt. We hear about the influences of the lobby and rise of oligarchs.

The people can pick those officials with competencies to run services that require expertise.
Today's politicians don't have to bein the 10% intelligence wise for us to see the problem with direct democracy. If you think modern politicians are incompetent or unintelligent, magnify that across the entire population.

And if you think the people can pick officials with the competencies to run services that require expertise then that's just representative democracy in another name. You're still tasking the population to pick someone to make the decisions based on the population's assessment of their ability to be competent in the future.

It's not corporations will not lobbying those officials just because they're titled differently.

The ancient Greeks practiced a form of direct democracy.

Every citizen can have a direct say in how the country is run. The Greeks only made males available to vote, today we would allow male and female.

They had a council chosen randomly who would be responsible for setting the agenda for citizens to vote and actively participate in government. People who want to be officials to run certain can be voted on and or be put forth to be chosen at random.

We have technology (phones) now that makes it accessible and possible.

Wait, you only have two sexes-male and female, listed. We know from science that many genders exist and you’re leaving many out in the cold.

I'm cool with getting rid of the electoral college.

But, direct democracy?

Nah, we're just to intelligent enough for that yet.
