cotto vs mayorga

PPV just kicked off.

Tarver is horrible as an announcer. During his intro... which he'd obviously practised... he basically forgot his words and was left smiling inanely and hoping one of his compatriots would save him...

Consort keep up the play by play!

First fight is Miguel Vazquez (solid ABC champion... two loses to Alvarez and one to Bradley, close win over Prescott) vs Leonardo Zappavigna (unbeaten prospect, had a lot of hype a year or two back).

First round is fairly uneventful. I'd edge it to Vazquez with his defence and some smart counter punching against the hard charging Zapp.

Vasquez feeding Zapp a solid diet of jabs and counter punches (notably straight rights and a left hook). Zapp is leaping in with wide punches and being picked off. He did put down some body work late in the round that may pay off later but a clear round to Vasquez.

2-0

Vasquez turned it on in that 2nd round

He is great at creating openings with his movement. He's already landed hard jabs, hooks and body shots, whereas Zappa just landed a couple body shots. Vazquez is gonna win this.

3 and 4 are roughly the same, although Zapp's getting a little closer. Right now he's struggling to handle the movement and counter striking of Vasquez... he's too slow and his punches too wide.

I've got it 4-0 although I could see a judge giving a round to Zapp.

Another round to Vasquez following the same pattern. 5-0

Zapp's swelling and cut up by the punches.

I'd give that one to Zapp... he finally got through early in the round and did some good work. Apparently the press row have Zapp winning... which seems to me to be rewarding blind ineffective aggression.

5-1

4 and 5 were all Vasquez, he controlled the action and had Zappa walking into his punches over and over again.

Zappa had some nice flurries in rnd 6, they didn't land cleanly but might have been enough to win him the round.

Very close round 7. Zapp had the flashier work... a good right hand and some decent body punches, but Vasquez was consistently good throughout the round with a decent jab and sneaky right hand.

I give it to Vasquez but the judges could go either way.

6-1

Another round to Vasquez by simply jabbing, moving and counter striking effectively. Zapp only got close once and couldn't do enough to take the round.

Zapp had a few moments in the last round but again you've got to balance 10 seconds of exciting stuff against 2 minutes 50 seconds of Vasquez being in total control.

I kind of lost track of rounds (I am writing the same thing over and over again)... 9-1 I think.

They thought this would be an interesting matchup because Zappa destroyed that Japanese boxer Kim in 1 round after Vasquez had beaten him by decision.

But the reason Zappa was able to knock Kim out so easily was because Vasquez had softened him up imo, Vasquez really put a long, sustained hurting on Kim in their fight.

Take my above comment and repeat it. A few moments for Zapp (a good punch on the itself as the round ended being a highlight) but the rest of the time was all Vasquez.

Now it's 9-1... got my rounds mixed up last time.

Repeat again although Zapp was a little better than before. Could see judges giving it to Zapp because they're boxing judges but Vasquez takes it for me.

10-1

Same again just without Zapp having any moments.

11-1 outclassing. Zapp simply wasn't seasoned enough, especially at hunting down a moving target. He seems like a very poor man's Angulo... needs to work on tightening his punches and his footwork.

Vasquez wins it by unanimous decision: 117-111 and 118-110 x 2.

Vasquez looked good but you have to factor in that Zapp was pretty raw. I don't think he causes any real danger to the other top fighters at 135lbs but he's a solid worker and may be a long term champ if he avoids the big names.

Now we get to the Arum undercard classic: an NFL player in his second pro fight and later Yuri Foreman... although Wolak's aggressiveness may just be enough too keep me awake.

Mayorga just called Cotto disrespectful... :)

Just another day at the office for Vasquez, he won that fight easily.

He is not physically that impressive, but his feel for timing, distance and his overall boxing IQ is high.

lol Mayorga trolling again

Mayorga: "he's not in my league" "sparring session" "3-4 round max"

"I don't like him cause he's vulgar"
