cotto vs mayorga

I thoroughly enjoyed the fight tonight... I'm going to have to catch up on the Martinez fight tomorrow.

For a different fighter maybe (although it would take some serious presence of mind to get hit with a big hook and then, as you fall down, decide you're going to pretend your hands broken and that you should hold it out and look at it while still falling before continuing the theatrics).

But this is Mayorga.

Can you think of a single fight where he hasn't gone out on his shield, swinging away? He got the stuffing beaten out of him by Oscar and kept going, by the end of the bout with Tito he was getting battered and he kept swinging... notably Tito also clearly hit him with a foul blow late in the previous round and when Mayorga complained to the ref Tito kept punching him... as clear a way out of the fight as a fighter can possibly be given... and no he kept punching.

Mayorga doesn't do "looking for a way out of the fight".

You're making all kinds of excuses in this thread. He was fucking demolished by the left hook, was on queer street when he got up, then got fucked up & finished by a JAB. His thumb might have been dislocated, but he was done like dinner. Stop discrediting Cotto, yo.

Cotto gets hit way too much to be a top fighter. Not saying he can't hang, but anyone not afraid to trade with him will cause problems.

Just shut the hell up. Cotto has been taking shots as he moved up the food chain. People said he didn't stand a chance with Zab, and look what happened. He took his best uppercut in the first round, got hurt and just fought through it. Basically walked Zab down FTW.

Have you actually watched the fight?

He gets hit by a monster hook, no doubt, and his legs start to go from under him... but even then he's looking at his hand. He steadies his legs while still glancing at his hand and then goes down to a knee... still looking at his hand. He gets up, looking at his hand, argues with the ref, looking at his hand, and then continues to fight, while looking at his hand. He gets hit clean with a damn good jab, loses his balance, rights himself, backs into the corner and calls to the ref to stop it.

As for disrespecting Cotto... I have no idea where you get that from. Cotto dealt with Mayorga with more ease than anyone not called Oscar did. He didn't welt under the pressure as some feared he would, he stayed disciplined, used his jab well while also being willing to go to war when needed. He was clearly going to win big regardless of the finish and as entertaining as it was he showed he deserved his 10-1 favourite tag. The fact that a fluke injury caused the stoppage rather than either clean punches or a wide decision doesn't take any gloss of his performance... just like it didn't for his win over Foreman.

What you're doing is both disrespecting and respecting Mayorga... disrespecting him in saying that a guy who has never been afraid to go balls out and get KO'd would look for a way out and respecting him by saying that he somehow managed to concoct a hand injury in the quarter of a second between getting hit and starting to look at it.

Slowing Zab down with two low blows didn't hurt either.
