Media Cory says Merab's takedown spam is a way to game the system

Imagine almost getting knocked out by Merab of all people then crying about the take downs you couldn't stop. I like Cory but this is just sour grapes. He lost everywhere the fight went. He's lost every fight where he's gotten a step up. Maybe he should focus on whatever is causing that.

I think top control can be overrated as well. Are you landing actually effective GnP? Are you actually advancing position? Are you putting your opponent into real danger with threatening subs? If you just "control" your opponent thats well down the list of criteria for me. If you land a takedown and eat a bunch of elbows from the bottom and your opponent throws up armbar and triangle attempts that put the opponent at temporary risk who has really done more in that round ya know?
I agree -- you can lose a round and still have more top control time if your opponent is more active from their back.

They need to change the rules. Merab is just the start of this style of fighting

If a takedown is worth “1” point, getting back to your feet should be worth “1.2” or something

Fuck no.

Should never have been put there in the first place.

Fuck this runner up prize bullshit

The prize for getting up is being able to throw strikes

I don’t dislike Merab, he games the rules though which I have said before. A lot of eastern fighters do unfortunately

The rules will never be perfect but they should incentivise striking over grappling at the very least. Do I want to watch kickboxing? No. I want them to grapple for the purposes of doing damage or looking for a finish, not for control. I want it to cost something if they spam takedowns without doing any damage.

UFC started as a way for the Gracie family to market BJJ so if anything they should incetivize grappling.

I understand that you dont like it, but they cant just change the rules for Merab, even if his style pisses people off, its not like just anyone can do that.

That's not a reason. No one should give a fuck what the Gracie's intended at this point lol

And dont get me wrong I have alot of respect for them.

Do many wrestlers have the ability to spam takedowns for 25 straight minutes? It's not gaming the system, he has a wildly unique talent and he's using it. Cory offered fuck all in return except almost getting KFTO in round 2. I like Sandhagen but i'd probably not whine about this one.

End of the day you're in a physical confrontation with your opponent, and you have no real effective answer to what he is doing. Focus on that.

Yea it does nullify Cory's point for this fight specifically but it is still a correct take on Merab's style in general.

It’s not that I don’t personally like it, it’s because it doesn’t represent or mirror actual combat anymore. It’s so far removed from actual fighting. You should be able to see that as a long time fan
