Media Cory says Merab's takedown spam is a way to game the system

Sean O'Malley just said the only way to beat Merab is to snipe him with a shot to get the KO.

Nobody will ever out cardio him over 5 rounds.

Let see how Yan approaches this in fight 2.

Moraes almost sniped him, had him in big trouble but if memory serves Merab really left himself open in a wild exchange

That's my whole point with Merab, bro does no damage, doesn't get subs, just games the system & showboats to convince the judges he's winning and I get called a hater.

I'd rather watch a guy hold someone down without any damage than seeing an energizer bunny continuously fail takedowns or get them and struggle to keep people on the ground, atleast holding people down takes skills.

Merab has over a 100 failed takedowns in his last 4 fights which is insanity and just about 5 mins of control time.

This is going to sound insane but he arguably lost the Umar fight and just won because of showboating, that fight could have gone either way.
You're a hater. Merab won that fight by every single metric.

Umar fight was close I agree, but Merab got better every round while Umar was fading quick. In real life with no time limit Umar gets ground into exhaustion and Merab does what he wants to him so the better man clearly won.

Its true but its more than anything that Cory did.

That being said they could change the rules to make takedowns with no further offense count as a neutral position because in the end the takedown guy negated anything the takerdowner did.

Thats the o ly way to fix the takedown gamification

In real life with no time limit no one would watch MMA because everyone has to get up for work the next day

Merab almost KOed you too dude, lol. Merab was playing with him the whole time as well, was clear as day.

According to my understanding of the updated unified rules, damage trumps all. So technically if I clip you with a hard punch and you take me down and lay on me, I should have won the round. According to the letter of the law if you connect on Merab with anything of significance and then he does the upty down takedown dance with you, it should be your round with zero controversy.

Obviously not talking about round 2 I'm talking about the cliche round from Merab that makes up at least 50% of the rounds he wins. And some, MANY, deservingly so. If there is nothing else to score there is nothing else to score. but if he takes any hard shots while playing huggy patty cake, fuck him. Thats not his round.

Every dude who has spent at least a little time on a mat versus a very high level wrestler knows one of the most frustrating things about the entire experience is the repeated take downs. It is demeaning as hell. It creates a level of frustration inside you that is hard to explain. Corey is frustrated and angry, I get it, been there, but those thoughts were best left unsaid.

I mean sure if your goal in a fight is to frustrate your opponent and not win over fans, use this style. I like fighters whose goal is to force their opponent to quit via submission or separation of thought from consciousness. but to each his own.

Nobody ever said Merab didn't "win the fight". But fighting used to be a fight. Now its this. Its fine. It is what it is. I don't have to like it.

Takedowns are an overrated statistic imo. A more telling statistic is top control time I feel. Getting one takedown and staying on top for the whole round means your opponent was unable to get up.
I think top control can be overrated as well. Are you landing actually effective GnP? Are you actually advancing position? Are you putting your opponent into real danger with threatening subs? If you just "control" your opponent thats well down the list of criteria for me. If you land a takedown and eat a bunch of elbows from the bottom and your opponent throws up armbar and triangle attempts that put the opponent at temporary risk who has really done more in that round ya know?

If it’s such effective tactic for winning, then Sandhaegen should employ it himself.

does this goofball not remember getting rocked and almost finished in a 10-8 round where he could have been stopped?
