In Sweden, several hospitals have given chloroquine - malaria medication - to corona patients.
But now some have stopped doing this, after reports of severe side effects.

One of those affected is Carl Sydenhag, 40.

- I had no peripheral vision and got cramps, says Carl Sydenhag.

In the USA, for example, chloroquine, malaria medicine, has been highlighted as a miracle cure for the new coronavirus. President Donald Trump has argued that chloroquine is a possible "game changer". In France, corona patients have been treated with the drug and believed that several of them became healthy after six days of treatment, La Provence writes .

Also in Sweden patients with covid-19 disease have been treated with malaria medicine. Carl Sydenhag, 40, from Stockholm, is one of the people who received chloroquine.

On March 23, Carl Sydenhag tested positive for the corona virus after having a fever and breathing difficulties. At Södersjukhuset in Stockholm he received antibiotics intravenously and chloroquine.

- I was prescribed to take two tablets in the morning and two in the evening, says Carl Sydenhag.

But instead of getting better, he began to feel worse.

- I got cramps and a headache that I have never had before. It felt like I had stepped into a high voltage plant.

Affected vision
Carl Sydenhag says that his vision was also affected and that his peripheral vision was reduced. He then decided to read the package leaflet and saw that the side effects he experienced usually occurred in one in 100 taking the medication.

- Then I called the Poison Information Center that said the dose I had been given was dangerous, so I stopped taking the tablets and went to the hospital again.

Once at the hospital, doctors thought that Carl probably received an excessive dose of the medication.

Today, he no longer has any symptoms for covid-19, but thinks that his vision is still worse than usual and that he still feels dizzy.

- But I feel much better than I did before. It may have been that the malaria medicine helped against the corona and I am very grateful for that, but you have to dose correctly, says Carl Sydenhag.

Has stopped giving chloroquine
Chloroquine has been given to covid-19 in several hospitals in Sweden. But last week, all hospitals in the Västra Götaland region stopped medicine.

- There were reports of suspected more serious side effects than we first thought. We cannot rule out serious side effects, especially from the heart, and it is a hard-dosed drug. In addition, we have no strong evidence that chloroquine has an effect at covid-19, ”says Magnus Gisslén, professor and chief physician at the infection clinic at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, to the Gothenburg Post .

The Southern Hospital in Stockholm, where Carl Sydenhag received chloroquine prints for covid-19, has also decided to stop giving malaria medicine to corona patients, according to the Gothenburg Post.

In an email to Expressen, Hedvig Glans, section manager of the infection unit at Karolinska University Hospital, writes that chloroquine was given to the more oxygen-demanding corona patients and that a thorough investigation was done before the drug was used.

Furthermore, Hedvig Glans writes that the use of chloroquine has decreased.

"By following developments, the scientific compilations and studies in progress, the use of chloroquine phosphate is being re-evaluated daily, and this has currently been greatly reduced and is not used routinely." , writes Hedvig Glans.

Great. So the tweet was misleading

Pretty sure they've known about these side effects all along. This isn't some new drug they just threw together in a lab yesterday. Chloroquine is more toxic than hydroxychloroquine, has more side effects. They are not synonymous.

as long as trump is happy that media is getting lower ad revenue it does not matter how many people die due to the pandemic

trump, thinking about stuff that matters right now - much easier than having to deal with a fucking pandemic

Saw this in the other thread, he does a pretty good job detailing how the Trump administration dropped the ball on this.

So, they’re still using it.

Next time, stop getting your news from Twitter.

where do you get your news, other than Trump press conferences?
lets hear these respectable sources

This. I've been on Hydroxychloroquine for 4 years to treat my rheumatoid arthritis and the only side effect I've had is mild photo-sensitivity. It has a much safer profile than Chloroquine. You can still get retinal toxicity with it but you have to take doses way beyond what is recommended and known to be safe for extended periods of time. Why Sweden decided to run a trial of Chloroquine is kind of weird. Either they had difficulty sourcing hydroxychloroquine or their doctors aren't practicing good, safe, and efficacious medicine.

Hey, aren’t you the idiot who believed numbers put out by China?

No, I'm the guy that believes USA has surpassed China in number of cases and its only going to get worse under your current incapable leadership
china has dealt with this much easier than US government ever will (being run by communist party and having no opposition makes things easier - thats why I believe their numbers are lower than whats going on in US atm)

cmon, lets hear where you get your news from - post some sources

Where the US President who's inept administration wasted 70 days dragging their feet in responding to the coronavirus gloats about the financial distress it's causing to the free press

I've never really been to Foxnews website before and made the mistake of reading through their comment sections, before that I was wondering why the man trying to save the world needed a security detail. I now understand lol.

What a piece of shit the president is, and what absolute scum his supporters are.

Pretty sure they've known about these side effects all along.

Of course they did, and people pointing to some outlier case to prove it's dangerous, are dumb as shit. You can point to potentially deadly side effects with damn near every drug on the market. Just because the drug didn't jive with one guy's system, is not a reason to give up on it. If we did that with every drug, there would be no drugs.

you take that back mister! sbbj is an expert! i on the other hand, am thirsting for blood...

Nope. I came clean in another thread and said I was incredibly wrong about deaths. Even said it was an absolutely stupid prediction

Doctors are actually taking it as a block against the virus as they treat patients.

I guess the Orange Man Bad brigade know better than these doctors

Incredible interview with Chomsky about all of this.

Through January and February, U.S. intelligence was trying hard to reach Trump's ear, but failed. Officials informed the press that 'they just couldn't get him to do anything about it. The system was blinking red.'

Trump was not silent, however. He issued a stream of confident pronouncements informing the public that it was just a cough; he has everything under control; he gets a 10 out of 10 for his handling of the crisis; it's very serious but he knew it was a pandemic before anyone else; and the rest of the sorry performance. The technique is well-designed, much like the practice of reeling out lies so fast that the very concept of truth vanishes. Whatever happens, Trump is sure to be vindicated among his loyal followers. When you shoot arrows at random, some are likely to hit the target.

Dr. Biden has some scathing cohesive critique on the US response:

No, I'm the guy that believes USA has surpassed China in number of cases and its only going to get worse under your current incapable leadership
china has dealt with this much easier than US government ever will (being run by communist party and having no opposition makes things easier - thats why I believe their numbers are lower than whats going on in US atm)
