Surgical masks do not provide protection in the level you need to block our other people’s. They block some but the gaps around the edges are too large. Everyone is supposed to wear one becuase it looks like most propagate asymptomatic and spread it. Wearing a mask stops that

@Hadron90 well mounting any kind of coherent federal response that didn't involve advising the ingestion of bleach, price gouging on supplies and fingerpointing, or acknowledging the virus was a credible threat at all when it first appeared or even providing the requested PPE at this very moment. Again, the numbers cannot be argued with. Why does Indian have a lower case rate with a much, much larger population and a supposedly inferior infrastructure? No amount of semantics or word games will change the reality of the numbers.

The estimates for US deaths have now be revised up to 74,000. It will be mucher higher I fear thanks largely to the crybaby denialists that insist their fellow americans as they join hands and follow the pied piper of derpville off a cliff into oblivion. The denialists lack courage and prefer to live in fantasy than recognize the hard truths of our predicament.

Well, America's numbers are only dropping since his bleach comment, so I think we can rule that one out. So lets look at the others, like acknowledging the virus was a credible threat when it first appeared. New York, where the majority of America's cases are, locked down two days before India did. I agree it should been sooner, as the Mayor of NYC repeatedly called for, but Cuomo insisted on staying open. Trump had asked states to limit gatherings to 10 people or less 4 days before that, but states were slow to adopt the CDC's guidelines.

Does India have more PPE than the US does? I don't know where I would find those numbers.

This obsession with Chinese numbers is completely unproductive. China's official stats are false, this much we know. It's been proven by multiple intelligence agencies across the world. But these same agencies also show China is well ahead of curve now. So by what order of magnitude do you think they're lying? Their death tally currently sits at 4643. So what is it really? 40k? 400k? 400 million?

I mean, reports from within China do leak out to the west. We all saw those first person reports in the early days of its spread.

The point is, however much they may have faked the data, it is clearly trending down from 2 months ago.

China probably is on the decline sure, but no one will ever have accurate numbers from them. Intelligence agencies can only guess at this stuff. Without doctors on the ground examining and documenting, you will never have an accurate number you can use for any real comparative analysis. Same with China's testing. They are just made up fake numbers. Even the tests they sent to other countries as aid were shown to not even work.

Uh, why do many professions where n95 masks to prevent breathing in particulates then? The entire war room KNOWS n95 masks are THE masks to use. I dont think anybody denied or debated that. Only when the supplies dried up did they start looking for alternative means

You are changing the subject. The argument isn't over whether or not masks or more or less effective than social distancing. I have no idea if that is true. The argument is this:

His post said that a mask protects others from you, not you from others. That's misleading and unscientific. A mask protects both the wearer and others around the wearer equally well, since basic physics tells you that the same airpaths available to a virus during an inhalation, are available during an exhalation. The original idea behind those types of sayings were that it makes more sense for infected people to wear a mask than non-infected people for efficiency reasons (why have 10 people wear masks if only one is infected? Only the infected needs a mask). But people misunderstand that intent spread the false idea now that masks somehow magically don't help protect you, and only protect others. Which is just wrong.

Ah okay, alright then, I haven't a clue. I think people should all wear masks because benefits - which I think most people can agree on.
