The surgeon general spread psuedoscience to ensure that hospitals could obtain PPE. There is no real science behind it.

His post said that a mask protects others from you, not you from others. That's misleading and unscientific. A mask protects both the wearer and others around the wearer equally well, since basic physics tells you that the same airpaths available to a virus during an inhalation, are available during an exhalation. The original idea behind those types of sayings were that it makes more sense for infected people to wear a mask than non-infected people for efficiency reasons (why have 10 people wear masks if only one is infected? Only the infected needs a mask). But people misunderstand that intent spread the false idea now that masks somehow magically don't help protect you, and only protect others. Which is just wrong.

After President Donald Trump floated ingesting highly toxic disinfectant as a treatment for the coronavirus, Kansas health authorities say a man drank cleaning product over the weekend.

Lee Norman, the state health officer, said the head of the Kansas Poison Control Center reported a more than 40 percent increase in cleaning chemical cases.

“Including a fellow over the weekend who drank a product because of the advice he’d received,” Norman said during a news conference Monday.

Norman didn’t identify where the man had gotten the advice. Last week Trump wondered aloud whether injecting disinfectant could fight COVID-19.

Experts say drinking bleach or any other type of disinfectant is dangerous and possibly fatal. The makers of disinfectant products, such as Lysol, have also issued warnings against consuming their products.

“We’re doing what we can to counter-message against that kind of remedy,” Norman said.
Still, the incident reflects the power of the president’s influence at a time when people across the country are looking for information about the coronavirus and how they can prevent becoming infected.

Asked by a reporter on Monday about “Maryland and other states” where governors say they have seen “a spike in people using disinfectant after your comments last week, I know you said they were ‘sarcastic’“ -- the president interjected before the reporter could finish and said, “I can’t imagine why. I can’t imagine why.”

“Do you take any responsibility?” the reporter followed up.

Trump said, “No, I don’t. No, I can’t imagine. I can’t imagine that.”

The particle size we’re talking is microns. A non n95 mask does not filter these out. It can however catch your expired air pretty well.

What is it about the US that allows a virus to spread and multiply so much? Other countries have densely populated cities. Other countries have morons and moronic leaders.

The virus started in China but that is irrelevant at this point. It's how you respond to the virus. Isn't it curious that countries neighboring China somehow don't have nowhere near the number of COVID cases and deaths that the US has? In fact, South Korea and Taiwan have beaten back the virus. Hell, China has beaten back the virus.

With a million cases and 50,000 deaths it is clear that the US has the absolute worst response of any country in the world by far.

The reason is clear. While not every American is a moron, enough of them are to make this virus widespread. I don't have to mention Trump. He's clearly an incompetent moron. It's also the all the other stupid Muricans. The ones who thought a non-sentient virus had a US political agenda. Who then thought it was a hoax. Who then did not take it seriously. Who don't believe in science. Then with a million cases, 50 thousand deaths, and no cure or vaccine in sight, want to reopen the country.

Oh and the virus expoaed the so-called greatest medical system in the world.

Sorry (this will hurt your feelings) but the states has 30% of Corona cases yet only 4% of the world's population. Your country's response to this crisis was the worst in the world thanks mostly to the ineptitude of Trump and numbers don't lie. Electing him into office was the greatest tragedy to ever befall America as the death toll from his ineptness eclipses 9/11. This cannot be argued against.

Surgical masks do not provide protection in the level you need to block our other people’s. They block some but the gaps around the edges are too large. Everyone is supposed to wear one becuase it looks like most propagate asymptomatic and spread it. Wearing a mask stops that

Surely this is because India, who has no data, and China, who makes theirs up, have about half the worlds population combined and don’t affect those numbers at all
