Contender Series 2024 thread

4 missmatches - 1 solid fight.
Pinto vs Camacho the only fight worth watching.
*W9
Steele vs Blair isn't a mismatch. Steele should rightly be favoured but Chasen Blair is a legitimate prospect who could fight in the UFC.

I think Blair is a mismatch. LW on 10 days notice. I think down the line he could be a UFC fighter but I don't think he is ready now. Against an elite jiu jitsu guy. I think this is a nightmare matchup. Game of him to take it, and obviously anyone who knows me knows I'm hoping against hope that I get to eat my words tomorrow and he shows out, but that's how I feel about it.

Blair's striking looked like it had improved a lot in his last fight, I think this could be competitive.

Tbf apart from Sam Kilmer who's kinda underrated Steele has only fought cans himself.
Contender Series has shown that Cage Warriors cans are in a league of their own. But the biggest thing is that Kody just seems like poison for Chase - better BJJ, power that carries late and more experience going the distance.

It's also hard to trust a guy who got subbed by Hassanzada tbh. I do feel like Chase could put things together down the line, but right now I think he falters against more well put together prospects.

Drilich and the brazilian fighting Dulatov are two dogs I'm considering. Aussie fight just seems far closer on paper than the odds indicate, and Dulatov is just untested.

Gauci is much more skilled than Drillich. The only slight doubt I'd have is that Drillich does have power.

An elite jiu-jitsu guy that has almost non-existent wrestling and has 1 wins by submission against a guy making his pro debut and is 2-3 in his career. He has sick grappling in grappling matches, but in all his recent fights he only shoots doubles when the opponent is upright against the cage. Have't really seen him showcase any wrestling/grappling skills in his last 3 fights, he tried a few takedowns where his opponent was getting up before he could even complete them and Blair is a very good collegiate wrestler.

Have you watched any of Steele's fights even? He's a walk-forward pressure brawler that relies on backing guys up into the cage and head-hunts with power overhands and hooks, occasional calf-kick and not a lot else. He's tough as nails (hell of a chin) and has a lot of power, so you definitely don't want to get stuck against the cage or brawl with him recklessly, but he throws nothing but power shots to the head and is kind of a plodding with his footwork.

He definitely has better BJJ, he just doesn't have the wrestling skills to get it to the ground in fights and based on how he fights (pressure brawler) I wouldn't say he even tries to wrestle and grapple guys, he just kind of has it in his back pocket. He has more experience "going the distance" but Blair is a former NCAA Div 1 wrestler and has fought 4 times in the last year, while Steele has only fought once in that time period. Blair was also fighting at WW for the start of his career when he is clearly a LW, so now that he is fighting at the right weight class he isn't going to get bullied as easy and won't be giving up significant height and reach.

He fought Hassanzada at 170 giving up like 3 inches in height+reach in his 5th fight while it was Hassanzada's 12th fight and he looked good until he made some bad mistakes in trying to take his back when he should just be trying to use anti-grappling against guys with dangerous submission games. Also Hassanzada is a very dangerous grappler in MMA, 6 of 11 wins by submission and been getting them consistently throughout his career (not just in his opening fights against low-level opposition).

Blair has been working on his BJJ a lot so it's improved leaps and bounds since then, but he would be smart to just avoid wrestling/grappling altogether and just try to use his better foot speed and ability to move in and out of the pocket to walk Steele into straight punches to the body and head.

To me it's a coin-flip fight and I'm actually backing Blair to take the right approach by keeping his back off the cage and not getting sucked into a brawl.

Finally Yadier Del Valle my fav prospect for this year. Julieta Martinez too from women's competition.
#10
