<<Console Wars>> PS5 vs. XSX

They’re both selling faster than the companies can make them. The real question is when are those next gen games coming out?

I think I'm going to wait until Far Cry 6 comes out to get one. I'm still not sure on if I'm going to go with PS5 or XSX. So far I don't really see too big of a reason to upgrade right now. FPS isn't something that's a big deal to me as long is it can be at least 30 I don't really notice that big of a difference. I have the Xbox One X and I don't really see any real reason to upgrade right now unless I wanted to get a PS5 and play the PS4 exclusives that I missed.

Sony has several and one coming practically every month this year. Crickets from M$.

Returnal is coming out at the end of this month, and the new Resident Evil is out at the start of May.

The fact is that no console has ever sold this many units or made this amount of money in this amount of time during its launch.

Keep the spin cycle running, weirdo.
Seriously you're the weirdo. As someone looking at the three of you interacting-- you're more of a Sony fanboy than they are of, well... anything

One of us feels the need to defend a corporation at every opportunity.. lol
Yes yes, we’ve been through this before. One of you posts something or quotes me, I respond and I’m the one inciting.

Isn't this what this thread was created for? You literally have Console War on the title thread...?

Or did you only want posts that bashed PS5 and praised XBox Series X???

LOL.
I wasn't the one who edited the title to include console war (presumably it was @Madmick ).. and I've hardly posted in here as the thread descended into endless bickering early on.

Yes I am sure a thread that had "PS5 vs XSX" wouldn't descend into a mudslinging shitfest.

If anything I (and many others I would imagine) was hoping this thread would be the thread where all parties would contain their bickering and leave the main PS5 and XSX threads alone.

Again it's amusing to see you criticize someone in a thread created specifically to compare the two formats. If one feels the need to arduously defend one format then go for it. He's not hiding and/or pretending not be a fanboy unlike other posters in here.

Indeed, @Deadwing did not put that in the title. I did. As he observes, this thread was doomed to devolve into a slugfest no matter how he framed it. Any critical comparisons of the two consoles will.

Staff's solution to contain this across the sub was to reply-ban the most persistent and aggravated trolls from the main XSX and PS5 threads because they were sabotaging discussion which is intended to be constructively informative for fans of those respective consoles. Nevertheless, it's impossible to prevent these wars entirely. After all, they're a tradition of videogame history, and it would amount to censorship, so the logical ensuing measure was to define a space to move all of that discussion where it derailed other threads. I chose this thread because it suited the topic best.

The result has been profoundly positive for the forum.

Oh, also, Crysis Remastered and Marvel's Avengers are the two latest multiplatform games that perform better on the XSX than the PS5. In Marvel Avengers, the PS5 is forced to use checkerboard rendering while the XSX maintains 4K native. The PS5 also appears to have more substantive issues with post-processing effects. In Crysis Remastered, the XSX appears to be delivering anywhere from a 44%-77% higher resolution across the fluctuating DRS output. This is true across modes.

im hoping the next Battlefield is only next gen so it doesnt get hampered by last gen. Right now the only ps5 games I have are AC valhalla which I havent touched and Cold war.

I fucking bought Crysis Remastered for PS5 the day I got my PS5 in November, but within days Crytek released a patch locking the frame rate for both the PS5 and Series X to 30 fps, with promises to bring back 60 fps later. Well, they finally brought it back with the most recent patch about two weeks ago, but now I have a Series X too. I’ve been holding off playing until they unlocked the fps again but I’m kind of thinking maybe I should have not bought it for PS5 and got it for Series X instead, though at the time I didn’t really think I’d get a Series X anytime soon. It kind of just happened as an impulse buy in mid-January.

Oh well, what can you do?

And at the time I don't think there was that significant of a difference. This is what I talked about previously in this thread. With ongoing support, over time, patches will always favor the XSX due to its raw hardware superiority, and the superiority of those cutting edge development tools that game-makers are just now learning how to use (when they're used). So far, to my knowledge, that has proven true for every game that has brought major patches to the latest consoles already.

Just play the game on your PS5 if you're eager to get going.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, and besides, if you watch the DF video, there's a three-way side-by-side of PS5 vs. XSX vs. PC. The three different levels of graphical fidelity, even on a crappy YouTube video, are quite obvious, sure, but the point is if you're going to throw out another $70 for the preeminent experience of the game, the XSX isn't the platform running it.

So just cross your fingers and hope it comes to Game Pass.

Well I was probably going to play it in the ray tracing mode anyway, which both the article and video say runs just slightly smoother on the PS5 than the Series X due to the lower resolution (1080p vs 1440)

True, there's a small consolation to the more significant concession of resolution. Although I'm still unclear on why DF doesn't quantify the "seems to run a bit smoother" stuff. PC sites started doing this 7-8 years ago (though you don't see it as commonly anymore since too many failed to comprehend what the additional charts meant). They show the average framerate, the lowest 1% framerate, and the lowest 0.1% framerate. Alternatively, you can show the total number of frames that were output below a certain level (i.e. below 55 fps).

Frankly, I'd like the same with the DRS analysis. What is the average resolution rendered? Next, what is the average fps of the lowest 10% and the highest 10% resolution in terms of total gametime?

But this may be asking quite a bit too much of the console crowd. Even the PC crowd didn't handle all the additional charts, well.

*Edit* Oh, and don't forget, while they haven't devoted much time to analyzing it, if you do go to ray-tracing, the PS5 has 44% fewer ray-tracing cores. This could have a significant impact on the quality of ray-tracing effects irrespective of resolution.

Yeah, I think on a go forward basis I’ll leave my PS5 gaming to either Sony exclusives or games that I want to do multiplayer with friends, as my friends are all firmly on team Sony, but anything else I may opt for going Xbox, particularly if it’s a visual smorgasbord type title. Eg. if CD Projekt Red ever 1. Fixes Cyberpunk; and 2. Releases their “next gen upgrades” for it, or if it’s on Gamepass obviously.

Or get the PC version so you aren't stuck playing an FPS with a controller in 2021.
