<<Console Wars>> PS5 vs. XSX

PS5 has a massive display problem — Sony needs to fix this now
Non-HDR images do not look good on PS5, and there's currently no fix

One might read the final paragraph of the article, and think this is a purely theoretical issue...

However, that only means you won't encounter the SDR output issue if you deliberately output in SDR (on any display). That doesn't mean that viewing content automatically rendered by the PS5 in HDR is ideal (either for the content or the display). If content wasn't natively composited in HDR, this results in poorer image quality. If your TV/display isn't capable of HDR, then viewing the content in HDR may suffer issues of washout or banding. It is superior to output SDR content if a display is only SDR-capable.

What this means if that if you are a prospective buyer of the PS5 who owns an SDR TV, you should consider:
  1. Upgrading to an HDR TV
  2. Waiting to buy the PS5 until this issue is resolved
  3. Buying a different gaming console that won't have issues on your TV

Odd, I hadn’t really noticed anything as I do not have an HDR capable TV so I hope this doesn’t lead to one of those “once you see it” moments for me because replacing my TV is probably not in the cards for at least 3 more years

Tesla and Apple may have started a new race for custom chip design now everyone is working their own chips including Google that are using base ARM designs from Samsung or their own ARM designs. Intel is rumored to be working on a RISC-V design that will distance themselves from ARM based designs nice thing is the RISC-V is open source design meaning people can change it or customize it without patent issues.

Perhaps. It seems odd that with over 6 million owners already it took this long for someone to spot the stark disparity in image quality on their TV between HDR mode and SDR mode you see in the original tweet I posted, but that's just the nature of things when people's homes aren't set up like labs with side-by-sides of a proper image playing next to an improper one like the PS5 outputs.

So the PS5 finally added an update for SSDs, a function most agree it direly needs, due to its gaunt storage capacity, and it's a disaster.

First, support was added for a second internal SSD, and it's broken. It simply doesn't work. Console won't boot.
PS5 Internal NVMe SSD Port Still Does Not Work After Update

Second, more importantly, it added the ability to store games on an external SSD. Fortunately, this works. That matters most. The issue is the external SSDs-- even the most expensive, fastest drives-- aren't outperforming external HDDs when it comes to transferring from the external drive to the console.

In the case of The Witcher 3, they aren't even outperforming HDDs in terms of load times. While many Sony fans were led to believe the PS5's Gen4 SSD would usher in tremendous load times advantages, in fact, neither the internal NVMe PS5 SSD (nor external NVMe drives) are outperforming SATA-based SSDs in terms of load times. In fact, generally speaking, the advantage over external HDDs often isn't terribly impressive.

Generally speaking, it's the same story on the XSX, with the key difference that transfer times to the XSX from an external drive are vastly superior using SSDs (as opposed to HDDs). Consequently, one of the only significant hardware advantages the PS5 enjoys-- which many opined to be the most significant-- has been rendered obsolete, thus far, and if anything, a win for the Xbox.

The fastest-selling console at launch in US history (if figures aren't population-adjusted).

Despite being in its third year of life, the Nintendo Switch has sold over twice as many units as the PS5 since the PS5's launch.

What a weird post. The update was not for internal SSD support so your claim that it’s “broken” is a flat out lie. Can’t break what isn’t there.

Second, why does anyone give a shit about load times from an external drive? The PS5 was touted for its speed in loading from the built in SSD which outperforms the Series X on next gen titles.

Very strange post. But I guess when PS5 is king of the hill yet again, you have to look for the moral victories and distort realities.

The salt lmao

How many multitudes more has it sold than the Series X then?

Just stating facts. "The fastest selling console in US history" is s misleading headline. That is the Nintendo Switch.

The fact is that no console has ever sold this many units or made this amount of money in this amount of time during its launch.

Keep the spin cycle running, weirdo.

I crunched the numbers today, since none of the articles shared them, as NPD didn't share them, and oddly, VGChartz shows that the PS5 isn't the fastest selling console at launch after five months in the USA.

Total Units Sold 5 Months After Launch
  • PS5: 2.896m units sold
  • XSX: 2.202m units sold
  • NS: 2.006m units sold
  • PS4: 3.203m units sold
  • XB1: 2.647m units sold

Yet a market analyst with hard numbers says otherwise. You’re such a dork lol. Acceptance is the first step.

VGChartz is also a market analyst group. The difference is they share numbers. As any article will tell you, figuring the exact sales is a guessing game, but missing by over 300K total sales doesn't seem like a margin for error that should happen.

Sounds like they should get their shit together then.

VGChartz's projected figures have almost always been near-identical matches to those from the manufacturers themselves on the rare occasion (such as milestones) when the latter share their sales totals.

I'd be wary of using VGChartz because they have (or least had) a reputation for inflating game sales. Maybe things have changed though. It's hard to find "official" figures unless a company like Capcom posts their best selling numbers on their IR site.
