When he wasn't gassed, he also looked capable on the feet.When Conor wasn't gassed he looked fine on the ground with Nate. Conor is competent on the ground when he is on top. His issue is fighting off his back: bad guard and no submissions.
I think McGregor should avoid the ground, unless he's closing out a round or he's ensured judge-friendly/fight swaying damage. Playing there for the better part of five rounds works against his nature as a striker and Nate will be onto it by the 2nd+ round.
I think McGregor is better served by keeping the fight standing, exercising patience, taking the fight slower, counter-punching, and selectively using high pressure at opportune moments. It's still not an easy fight, but the path to victory goes through his preferred avenue of attack. Worst case, he'll have to adopt Nate's attitude of kill or be killed, because this can turn into a grueling war, pretty easily.
