Conor needs the Holloway gameplan

When Conor wasn't gassed he looked fine on the ground with Nate. Conor is competent on the ground when he is on top. His issue is fighting off his back: bad guard and no submissions.
When he wasn't gassed, he also looked capable on the feet.

I think McGregor should avoid the ground, unless he's closing out a round or he's ensured judge-friendly/fight swaying damage. Playing there for the better part of five rounds works against his nature as a striker and Nate will be onto it by the 2nd+ round.

I think McGregor is better served by keeping the fight standing, exercising patience, taking the fight slower, counter-punching, and selectively using high pressure at opportune moments. It's still not an easy fight, but the path to victory goes through his preferred avenue of attack. Worst case, he'll have to adopt Nate's attitude of kill or be killed, because this can turn into a grueling war, pretty easily.

Look at it like this Max beats Conor if they meet today....

To be honest, he busted Nate up pretty good. If he would've just fought more conservatively, I think he would've won. He started gassing and that's when Nate started landing. It was all downhill from there.

That being said, he's not going to win against a full-camp Nate Diaz.

Conor's best weapon is still his left hand. He shouldn't abandon that and go into what is arguably Nate's best weapon, the ground game.

Its a problematic match up for the exact reason you stated. Most of the people that beat Nate, excluding Thomson, do it with some striking but they mix in wrestling and top control. Conor is not suited to wrestle and top control Nate unless he hurts him in the stand up. This is exactly why Conor should not take a rematch with Nate, at least not at this point in time. Conor is banking on out striking Nate Diaz in a 5 round fight to beat him. Good luck with that.

TS, you are rapidly approaching the worst thread starter status on Sherdog.

Because Nate was probably just rolling around with no concern, while Conor was putting 100% effort into sweeping him and getting back up.

They weren't on the ground long enough for you to say Conor looked fine. Let Conor sit in Diaz's guard for a whole round before you make assumptions.
