But they were both great, along with Morrison's. But would you or anyone else recommend Ultimate X-Men? I hear that the Ultimate comics are alright up until Ultimatum, which is a pile of shit apparently.

Ultimate X-Men is terrible. Terrible.
Ultimate Spider-Man is the best and most consistant Spider-Man (up to and including issue 160 ) and The Ultimates Vol. 1 & 2 are about as good as comics get.
 
the planet that was destroyed was a dead planet but yeah i guess that was kinda something happening. at the end doom is shown in possession of a chunk of the planet that is supposed to be some sort of trigger? i've said this before but hickman's stories border being so high concept that they become abstract and uninteresting. i would be willing to give his stuff outside of marvel a shot. east of west and the manhattan projects seem promising but so far his avengers run is a headscratching disappointment.
 
i don't get what black panther was being so emo about. they blew up a planet devoid of life in order to save earth and he acts like it was a morally despicable decision that somehow tarnished who he was. i do like that Namor keeps pointing out how corny and hopelessly idealistic the other new avengers are.
 
Hickman's Fantastic Four runs is one of the best since John Byrne imo.

I just finished Millar's Ultimates actually. The art was great and the massive battles are orgasmic, but I'm really not a fan of everyone being portrayed as an asshole to varying degrees.

Yes. Vol. 3 was so disappointing, especially after getting excited to see Joe Mad's stuff.

There is the Ultimate War crossover, that is completely awesome.
(Avengers vs. X-Men) vs. Magneto (who is insanely powerful, much more so than 616 Magneto).

Ellis's UGT has been on my list for a while. You've read his Planetary, right? That shit is getting a hardcover omnibus release next year. Think I might buy it.

And is John Byrne's Next Men any good?
 
Next Men starts off sort of good and then gets a little crazy, can't recommend it.
 
I've been looking at the covers posted higher on this page and
to my regret I really can't enjoy many comics these days,
because of the drawing style.

I'm used to Jim Lee for X men and Todd McFarlane for Spidey
I know some artists draw like them or better presently,
but the overall standard feels like it went down or more cartoon style.

I quit X men after Onslaught and
Spidey after Ben Reilly took over as Spidey

Interesting you're still caught up in 90's art which in my opinion is by far inferior than today's standards

and really a good story usually should overcome bad art or art that isn't your preference

I liked it. It was a well thought-out and executed X-crossover. I remember it being very innovative and gutsy the way switched out all the X-titles with the alternate universe versions for four(?) months. My favorite books, which coincidentally had the best artwork among all of them, were Astonishing X-Men (Joe Madureira) and Generation Next (Chris Bachalo).
