Comic Book Discussion Thread Vol. 10

Just read the first arc of Fear Agent and Im hooked. It's a obvious homage to the old 50's sci fi pulp stories. Somewhat modernized, but no less pulpy and it's genuinely funny. So far the story is also genuinely surprising and engrossing. So it's a superb balance of everything you like about comics, except in a space setting seen through a modern eye that wears it's influences on it's sleeve. It feels like an absurd concoction of Star Wars, Firefly, spaghetti westerns and Buck Rogers. it feels like the elements are so ridiculous that you don't see how it could ever work, until you read it.

Highly recommended.

As for the collection itself, it's fantastic. its feels and looks more like one of DCs "Absolute" editions than just a slightly bigger hardcover. The fact that I got it off amazon for a bit over 30 bucks is mind blowing.

Another great Ultimate arc, is the Ultimate Galactus Trilogy.

there is so much that went right with the ultimate verse, including this series (as well as the ultimates, ultimate spider man, ultimate fantastic four, ultimate x-men, etc.). it's too bad card fucking neutered ultimate iron man straight to shit.

I've been looking at the covers posted higher on this page and
to my regret I really can't enjoy many comics these days,
because of the drawing style.

I'm used to Jim Lee for X men and Todd McFarlane for Spidey
I know some artists draw like them or better presently,
but the overall standard feels like it went down or more cartoon style.

I quit X men after Onslaught and
Spidey after Ben Reilly took over as Spidey

The stuff I posted on this page was Joe Madureira. He has a significant Manga style which can be very cartoony at times. His runs on the X-Men (AoA, Phalanx Covenant) are amazing.

That doesn't appear to be your cup of tea. The good news is the Ultimate stuff I posted are not cartoony at all and are much more realistic than Jim Lee (except Chris Bachalo, who is amazing but not realistic at all).

Interesting you're still caught up in 90's art which in my opinion is by far inferior than today's standards

and really a good story usually should overcome bad art or art that isn't your preference

Sometimes the art can ruin even a great story.

Liefeld for life, brah.

Read the first book earlier today in the Ultimate Galactus Trilogy and it was good shit.

I started reading Abnett and Lanning's run of Guardians of the Galaxy. It's some awesome stuff. Constant action and has the current roster of the movie. Anyone else recommend more books?

Also, I just got done reading Irredeemable Ant-Man. I thought it was great, but it wasn't Hank Pym. Any recommendations for Hank Pym books?

Planetary and the first 12 issues of The Authority.

Can't wait to get into this tomorrow.

Has anybody ever read Rex Mundi? Its available from Dark Horse. Seems to have a Da Vinci Code vibe.

Can you link me the covers please. I can't seem to find them on google... :icon_neut

Writers could help as well.

Both are written by Warren Ellis. But why do I have to post covers? :icon_neut

And I would also suggest X-O Manowar from Valiant Comics if you want more awesome sci-fi action shit.

Oh, I thought they were Guardians of the Galaxy books, but I will definitely check these out as well. I read Extremis from him and I enjoyed it.

Hey Bob glad to hear you enjoyed this book so far and thanks for the private message about it being in stock on Amazon..

Because I also love that 50's pulp style id also suggest picking up Hickmans Manhattan Projects, it is definitely from the same genre and has that same sci fi feel to it.

just got all caught up on Fatale. i'm glad i decided to follow brubaker after marvel. eventually i want to read incognito, sleeper and all the criminal library. Fatale was nominated for 6 Eisner awards which is pretty high praise. the last 4 issues were self contained mini's that i'm sure will eventually have implications on the main plot. the comic doesn't have a letters page but instead Ed writes about tv shows he is enjoying at the moment which is funny because he complained about people not writing in enough and then doesn't print any letters.

i'm pumped UBER #2 comes out on wednesday. did anyone checkout Suicide Risk? the 2nd issue comes out this week and i'm considering jumping on. also is anyone reading Hickman's East of West?

Just read the first volume (5 issues) of Indestructible Hulk pretty good
