In that regards it's still more style vs skill.

He can't draw feet but he's still more well known than most of the artists out there.

In his case, definitely. He also made his mark at a great time. If he started out today I don't think he'd be nearly as successful.

There is definitely less care taken in developing a characters in Marvel (and probably DC). Now its all about the cover and escalating the insanity.

Wolverine went from a trained superhero with claws attached to his arms in Hulk 180-182 to a guy that can survive being disintegrated.

The X-Men went from a school that trained its students in the usage of their powers, while using them to defend innocents and promoting equality to several camps of super vigilantes. There is no story. There are no boundaries.

That being said, I'm enjoying the New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men right now.

Oh, God, are you referring to that moronic Civil War spin off where Wolverine gets burned down to his adamantium skeleton and somehow manages to regrow all his organs, skin and muscle? It's been years since I read it and the sheer stupidity still pisses me off.

It's up there with an early DC/Marvel crossover in which Batman manages to hurt the Hulk...by punching him in the stomach.

Good point. Liefeld was on Dennis Miller last time, crazy how popular he was back in the days. I saw an interview with him on youtube as well, he seems like a nice guy. I thought he'd be a dick with all the scrutiny he gets but he was happy and kind of out there.

I just started drawing and yeah 5 year olds can draw better than me.

Agreed. That's one reason Magneto was always in my top 10; he was capable of terrible violence, but never for the sheer joy of it. It was always to serve the Greater Good(the Greater Good!:icon_lol:).

Dr Doom is another excellent example of the, "Heroic Villain". While an utter bastard, he does have a(very)warped code of honor. This extends to beating the crap out of Super Villains who threaten the Fantastic Four, on the grounds that no one else but Doom is allowed to kill them. He also saved Captain America's life and allowed Spider Man to walk away unharmed even after Spidey had insulted him, because he owed Spider Man his life.

By contrast, characters like the Red Skull and Sabertooth are just complete tools with no redeeming features.

I also prefer Bane to the Joker for this reason(I'm talking about the Comic characters, not their movie versions).

Well, I do think its good to have a maniac and sociopath thrown in every now and then. Red Skull is iconic as pure evil, BUT has a method to his madness.

Sabretooth is no longer cool because they beat his Wolverine rivalry to death.
He used to be a high end assassin. Now he's just an amateur Wolverine.

Be careful, this is Dragon's favorite Marvel moment. :icon_lol:

i'm liking all-new and uncanny but i remember as a kid wishing x characters had solo books and when they do get them they don't last long. i think the characters kinda lose their appeal when they are by themselves. wolverine is popular but alot of his solo stuff is bad.

Well, yeah; if you want a character who's the absolute epitome of evil, it's hard to top someone who was BFF with Hitler.:icon_twis

Did you read the mini series about the Skull that came out a few years ago? It tells his origin from childhood to joining the Nazi elite. Very grim, chilling stuff.

batman used his preptime to watch video on the hulk and realized he has an iron jaw but everyone has glass stomachs. take tito for example he was known for his ability to take punishment but body shots make him cry. once machida dropped him with a knee everyone caught on.

Yeah, but this was Prime, Motivated Hulk with That Look in his eyes.:icon_chee

I know exactly what you mean. Not every character can carry his/her own book.
For a character to carry his own book you need an origin (loaded with tragedy), a destiny/fate/quest, and/or arch enemy.

Very few solo books are able to function without an arch enemy (or 9). Hellboy doesn't have an arch enemy but he has that origin/destiny thing in spades.

Its incredible that Batman and Spiderman have all of that. They're the best characters of all time because they have all the ingredients. As a team, The X-Men are great for the same reasons.

Wolverine is one of the greatest comic book characters of all time. His solo book sucks. It sucks. It has always sucked. If they never gave him a definitive origin and made his eternal quest the pursuit of that origin then he could have had an epic run like the HB series. He is also missing an arch enemy or even a significant rogue gallery. Maybe Sabretooth was considered his arch enemy at one time but that was completely manufactured and once Wolverine cut his head off for the 100th time it became even less significant.

Most of the original 2 X-Men teams have tremendous origins filled with tragedy and as a team they have that quest thing going. They share an amazing rogue gallery, too. Individually that falls apart but that is okay imo.

I don't even know if any of this makes sense I just kept typing :/

I don't think so, what was it called? Sounds interesting.

it's funny because when i was a kid i thought captain america was the lamest character ever but ed brubakers cap run is pretty much responsible for me getting back into comics after 10 years away. his origin is pretty great and he actually has a pretty good rogues gallery also. i think alot of the stuff coming out in the 90's just sucked and cast a shadow over some great characters.

i don't really like sabretooth as a villian he is pretty generic and flat but when he or a version of him from another time was in the exiles i liked him better than wolverine. i actually was looking forward to his return but he quickly assumed the role of brutish lacky.

Batman and Robin vol. 1 Born to Kill was awesome!

Didn't think I would like Damian cause he was a prick first couple scenes but he does turn to a bit of a bad ass. NoBody was a great villain shame we won't see him anymore.

Damian was a badass, I hate that well............you know

the Batman and Robin Annual is a must read

i just wanted to give Kieron Gillen's UBER another shout out. i just read the first issue(there was also a #0)and i think it has potential to be an indie classic. it seems to be flying under the radar. :icon_sad:

I read Uber 0 and liked it. Haven't read 1 yet. But in other news a new issue of Prophet came out this week and it was great of course.
