Comic Book Discussion Thread Vol. 10

See Lobo is a comedy hero. Like Bugs Bunny, he's susceptible to vanity and infants. Otherwise skies the limit.

Midnighter gives a tremendous shit about Apollo. Or to him. I'm not sure which is most accurate.

If there's a comics hero that gives less of a fuck than Itto Ogami. The guy who asked his infant son if he wanted him to kill him. Who cried like once, and in a flashback, and it was more like this single tear because he just found out his pregnant wife had been viciously killed. Whose ratio to heroics is off the charts. Who fucked a woman in front of strangers and somehow granted her dignity in the process. Who would, if you would gave a fuck? He would take it from you and demand to know what the fuck it even was.

I'm all ears.
Maybe Conan? He's a book character but there's comics too

Just finished reading Harley Quinn: Preludes and Knock Knock Jokes, fun stuff, pretty damn funny. I had a feeling I would dig HQ since I liked her in the Batman cartoons and Arkham games. Gotta go pick up some others. :)

Next up on the dock Hell Boy Volume 2 and Wolverine Weapon X. Was a massive fan of Volume one Hell Boy seeds of destruction and is actually one of the first comic collections I ever bought. So hopefully this is just as good.

Vol. 2 is Wake the Devil, its awesome. I might even read along again with you. It can be like an uber-nerd book club.

Other than Hellboy: In Hell, which I felt was rushed, every HB volume is awesome because they continue to add to the mythology with each one.

I wish Barry Windsor-Smith did more work-for-hire.

Oh yes. blink (above) was blown away by Mignola's iconic art in HB. I told him he's going to lose his shit when he sees BWS' Weapon X.

Thor: Godbomb 2 and Batman #20 came out this week. Excited to read those.

I wonder if you're a fan of 100 BULLETS.

Do you like Peter Milligan?

Garth Ennis really delivers. I enjoy his UNKNOWN SOLDIER mini series; not too many people talk about that one.

I did read 100 BULLETS. While I enjoyed the concept, I found it rather heavy going at times.

Unknown Soldier is superb. I would love to see a movie or TV mini series adaption.

moon knight and nova both had short lived series a few years back which had some pretty awesome artwork, just dont know why those series dont take off ... i guess people arent as fond of those characters

I don't see how Siegfried has a chance against Lobo without Roy and Montecore.

he was in a terrible storyline with Deathstroke called Hunt for Lobo written and drawn by everyone in here's favorite Rob Liefeld

now I think he's in Jim Starlin's current run on Stormwatch

Edit: actually he will be joining Stormwatch in issue #22, I plan on picking up that arc

lobo really gives 0 fucks. he countered a nipple punch with a flagrant knee to the gonads.:icon_lol:

With Regards to Liefeld....

In the comic industry, you don't really need to know the human anatomy and it's more like about your style right?

I'm sure there are plenty of guys that can draw proportional figures out there but aren't making Liefeld money.

anyone else think the old thanos story in the free comicbook day Infinity prequal was better than the thanos story going on currently. marvel is trying to make thanos so dark he's coming off like hannibal lecter. in the old short he travels to a planet who worships there last flower and goes there to trample to it. that to me is way more creative and evil than the serial killer stuff.

Leifeld is the Michael Bay of comics.

Of course anatomy isn't essential, these are comics not reality. Some of the best artists don't draw even remotely realistic (Mignola for example). That being said, Leifeld isn't being artistic like Mignola, he's just not very good. He can't even draw feet.

Starting Vol. 2 tonight, can't wait.

I'm haven't read the new stuff, but its silly if that is what they're doing.
Any villain worth his salt has a side that the audience can sympathize with.

i used to like the x-men when i was younger but just recently started reading again with bendis's run. i couldn't put my finger on why i didn't like them as much as back then but i think it's because they don't have good origins and most mutants can't carry a book on their own because of that and most have kinda weak powers if they were alone. would you read an ongoing about ice man, angel, beast, jean, cyclops etc. i don't think mutants suck but i see why they only work in team atmospheres.

In that regards it's still more style vs skill.

He can't draw feet but he's still more well known than most of the artists out there.

Agreed. That's one reason Magneto was always in my top 10; he was capable of terrible violence, but never for the sheer joy of it. It was always to serve the Greater Good(the Greater Good!:icon_lol:).

Dr Doom is another excellent example of the, "Heroic Villain". While an utter bastard, he does have a(very)warped code of honor. This extends to beating the crap out of Super Villains who threaten the Fantastic Four, on the grounds that no one else but Doom is allowed to kill them. He also saved Captain America's life and allowed Spider Man to walk away unharmed even after Spidey had insulted him, because he owed Spider Man his life.

By contrast, characters like the Red Skull and Sabertooth are just complete tools with no redeeming features.

I also prefer Bane to the Joker for this reason(I'm talking about the Comic characters, not their movie versions).

they start off with you being able to sympathize with him but then he quickly becomes a disgusting abomination. aaron is writing it and he has a penchant for being dark, but although thanos is evil i thought he had sense of honor and in this book he is sadistic and unlikable.

There is definitely less care taken in developing a characters in Marvel (and probably DC). Now its all about the cover and escalating the insanity.

Wolverine went from a trained superhero with claws attached to his arms in Hulk 180-182 to a guy that can survive being disintegrated.

The X-Men went from a school that trained its students in the usage of their powers, while using them to defend innocents and promoting equality to several camps of super vigilantes. There is no story. There are no boundaries.

That being said, I'm enjoying the New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men right now.

Thanos is supposed to have a code of honor, and at one point he even tried to act as a "hero".

Glad I haven't read this latest version.
