Hey, thanks for the playthrough! Honestly I'm surprised you liked it. I might try for another level, maybe do some kind of hell-catacomb vibe.
@3:30 - When I started the map I wanted to make something in the style of E1 & E2. By the end of it I said "eh, fuck it" and tossed in the D2 enemies for the final showdown at the docks.
@4:08 - Huh, that didn't happen in my game. Weird, must be different ports, I tested mine in GZDoom.
@5:45 - Looks like I need to change those two 4xShells in the guard room to a 20xBox. I had been debating that on my playtesting.
@11:03 - Oh man, the lighting is TOTALLY different in your game than it was in mine. I was using GZDoom and the dark room is a 100% completely different experience. The base illumination is a touch brighter, the lights actually give off light, and the fireballs illuminate stuff as they travel. So you get to aim off flashes and back-lit-silhouettes instead of needing to get lucky or finding the goggles.
Also, a designer's note: that room is different if you play it before the chemical area. Hitting the switch in the computer room that opened all the doors also kills the overhead lights. (That switch is also needed to open a set of bars blocking the red key if you do the barons part first). The initial design idea was that it would kill the lights in the whole complex, but implementation would have been extraordinarily tedious so I just did that one room only.
@11:17 - You didn't explore the maze all the way, there is a chaingun at one end.
@15:20 - lol took me a minute, clicked when you mentioned Carell: Anchor Man
@19:45 - meant to be a nod towards realism, but it's unintuitive for a Doom design so I should remove it.
@21:00 - another glitch that didn't happen in my GZDoom test. Leaving that end texture off makes it look like open sky (sail to freedom!):
@22:30 - it's subtle, but those are different lamp types than all the others in the room. Might have to change it to the cylinder ones to make it a touch more obvious. I debated going with torches but that seemed like too much of a CHECK OVER HERE! vibe.
I found it quite hardCool, I’ll check this out later. Though part of me actually wants to play the map myself first before watching your vid so that I can go in blind. I might try installing gzdoom on my work laptop and giving it a whirl before the weekend if I can find the time.
Short answer: is it good?
I found it quite hard
Bug yes it is an interesting level
Don't have to watch my one hr vid haha. Just tagged ya because you told me bout it
Play it blind and let me know if you ever try the map
Haha don't want to ruin map for yaBro, I watched all 9 episodes of your Sigil play through, including your ten minute boxing match with a Baron on E5M6 (during which you probably died 30 times). After all that how can I not watch this?
@JBSchroeds
Found out I oficially can't get GZdoom on my POS pc
So I got Lzdoom instead but it seems laggy
But I think the lighting worked n your map
For testing purposes I replayed your map again and some Doom 2 lvls
Wish I had a good PC
But this Covid crap threw and chance of that out the window
On the other hand Covid is the reason I'm playing so much doom haha
Why I mostly seek pure vanilla style maps - the only thing I can play that functions properly
I came up with a concept for a new level and have started working on it. But...it's going to take a while. If I can pull off the concept it should be awesome but the execution is going to be really complex. I've also changed my workflow based on how my first map went. I'm not bothering with any graphical stuff until the level is done. So lighting, texture selection, alignment, all that happy crap gets to wait. For now it's all just one default texture:
This was the right choice; I've made a lot of progress and have the opening sequence of the level done (which is nearly as large, and much more complex, than my entire first level).
Yeah, reaching through the gate is intended. I wanted to move the switch back and force you to shoot it like in the movies but there is no action in the base game that works that way.
Performance wise, the best bet is usually to reduce the resolution. I think it defaults to your native resolution, so on most computers that's 1080p. You could probably get away with 720p without noticing much of a difference in visual fidelity and it should bump up your FPS by ~20-50%.
10 year old laptopJust what kind of rig are you running anyway @Clippy ?
10 year old laptop
Lol I'm probably going to get a new one soonWe need a gofundme for you to buy a new computer. Nothing crazy, just good enough to play gzdoom. If Sherdog can raise money for that piece of shit @That209 to do drugs or whatever then we can definitely fund your Doom videos. Maybe you should start a patreon account or something?
That computer is ~7 years old, so not much newer than what you've already got. Personally, I'd save my money.

You might want to hit up the PC Building thread [LINK] and give your budget and see what they can come up with for options. I haven't spec'ed anything in a while but I'm pretty sure that if you already have a monitor/mouse/keyboard then you can build a respectable entry level gaming box for $400-500.
