Announcement Trailer for Christopher Nolan's WWII Film DUNKIRK

Dunkirk-080416-Dragonlord.jpg

The first official trailer for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk gives a brief peek into the World War II movie. The film focuses on the 1940 evacuation of Allied soldiers by the British Army from the city of Dunkirk, France. It's the filmmaker's first full-length feature since 2014's Interstellar.

The cryptic clip opens with a seemingly innocuous shot of sea foam washing up on the beach, before tension quickly mounts. Troops are seen aligned on the beach, flanking the harbor, and later out on the water. "At the point of crisis," "At the point of annihilation" and "Survival is victory" flash between scenes. Its cliffhanging ending shows the faces of soldiers as they begin to realize there's a possible threat overhead.

Dunkirk stars Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance. It also costars One Direction's Harry Styles, Jack Lowden and Aneurin Barnard. Produced by Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas, Dunkirk will debut in theaters on July 21st, 2017.

Cillian Murphy Reteams with Christopher Nolan on WWII Thriller DUNKIRK

Cillian-Murphy-Peaky-Blinders-Dragonlord.jpg

Christopher Nolan is enlisting his longtime collaborator Cillian Murphy to join the ensemble cast of his action-thriller Dunkirk after working together on the Dark Knight trilogy and Inception, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Newcomer Fionn Whitehead will star alongside British actors Jack Lowden and Aneurin Barnard, as well as One Director singer Harry Styles. Murphy is expected to play a supporting role alongside Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh.

Nolan wrote Dunkirk, which chronicles the WWII evacuation of Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo, the British military operation that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers who were surrounded by German forces. He’ll also produce the film with Emma Thomas.

Murphy was last seen opposite Chris Hemsworth and Benjamin Walker in Warner Bros.’ whale tale In the Heart of the Sea. He next stars in Ben Wheatley’s crime drama Free Fire with Brie Larson and Sean Ellis’ WWII thriller Anthropoid with Jamie Dornan.

One Direction's Harry Styles Joins Christopher Nolan's WWII Drama DUNKIRK

Harry-Styles-Dunkirk-Dragonlord.jpg

In a casting move that can be described as boy band meets Battle of the Bulge, One Direction member Harry Styles will be joining the production of Christopher Nolan's WWII action-adventure project Dunkirk.

There was an extensive search to find the film's young leads. Along with Styles, English actors Jack Lowden and Aneurin Barnard are in talks to board epic production. Newcomer Fionn Whitehead has been cast in what could best be described as the lead role of the project but sources say the script is ensemble in nature.

The Warner Bros. film centers on the British military evacuation of the French city of Dunkirk in 1940, one of the biggest battles during the way. Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh are the bold names that will surround the newcomers.

Production on the film, which will be shot on 65mm large format film and Imax, will begin in May. Dunkirk is set to hit theaters July 21, 2017.

Dunkirk will be the Styles' feature film debut. Last summer, it was announced that One Direction would disband in 2016 and would not tour for their fifth studio album, so this casting may mark a career shift for the British recording artists, from the arena stage to the silver screen.

Lowden recently appeared in BBC's adaptation of War and Peace, while Barnard starred as King Richard in BBC-Starz miniseries The White Queen.

Newcomer Fionn Whitehead in Talks for the Lead in DUNKIRK

Fionn-Whitehead-Dunkirk-Dragonlord.jpg

Christopher Nolan has set his sights on newcomer Fionn Whitehead to play one of the two young leads in his WWII movie Dunkirk, multiple individuals familiar with the Warner Bros. project have told TheWrap.

It is unclear whether Whitehead has closed a deal at this point as he seemingly has no U.S. representation, but insiders suggest he is Nolan’s choice — and the Dark Knight director often gets his man. Nolan has been testing young actors for weeks, many of whom remain largely unknown.

Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance will co-star in the action-adventure movie, which chronicles the WWII evacuation of Dunkirk. Warner Bros. will release Dunkirk worldwide on July 21, 2017.

Whitehead’s only role to date is ITV’s three-part domestic horror-drama Him, which marks his first screen role, though he is a member of the National Youth Theatre according to Screen Terrier.

Christopher Nolan and Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema Reteam for DUNKIRK

Hoyte-van-Hoytema-Cinematographer-Dragonlord.jpg

As Christopher Nolan prepares for an early summer shoot of his World War II drama Dunkirk, he’s busy filling out his cast and crew. Set to shoot in IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, many have wondered if longtime collaborator Wally Pfister would return or perhaps he’d reteam with Interstellar‘s Hoyte van Hoytema.

It looks like it will be the latter, as the announcement that Hoytema has deservedly joined the American Society of Cinematographers includes a note that he is “currently prepping an untitled feature for director Christopher Nolan, with whom he first collaborated on Interstellar.”

Following his work on Spectre, Her, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Let the Right One In, and more, fans look forward to how he pulls off a period epic with Nolan, particularly with a completely large-scale format.

Shooting partially on location in Dunkirk, the film is reportedly inspired by Operation Dynamo, a miracle of a mission in 1940 where nearly 340,000 Allied troops were rescued after being trapped by the Nazis in this northern area of France.

Hans Zimmer to Score Christopher Nolan's DUNKIRK

Hans-Zimmer-010816-Dragonlord.jpg

Though he has one of the more enviable careers that a composer could ever hope for, 2015 wasn’t a particularly strong year for Hans Zimmer. This is a far cry from his booming work on some of Hollywood’s biggest productions of the last decade or so.

Zimmer's most notable work, however, has been in collaboration with Christopher Nolan, on Interstellar, Inception, and the Dark Knight Trilogy specifically, and he’s now looking to continue this partnership by scoring Nolan’s recently announced Dunkirk.

For those unfamiliar, Dunkirk focuses on the evacuation of Dunkirk at the beginning of World War II, in which 300,000 Allied troops rescued the titular French city from the grip of the Germans.

The film has yet to cast its major leads, as Nolan is looking to have essential unknowns for those parts, but Tom Hardy, Kenneth Brannagh, and Mark Rylance are all in talks to join the picture. Dunkirk is set to open on July 21, 2017.

It's Official: Christopher Nolan to Direct DUNKIRK; Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh in Talks to Star

Christopher Nolan looks to be headed to France during World War II for his next project.

Sources tell Variety that Nolan will direct “Dunkirk” from his own original screenplay as his next project. Insiders say the yet-to-be cast unknowns will lead the cast, but that Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy are in talks to join the ensemble.

Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner and wife, Emma Thomas.

The story is set during the legendary evacuation of the northern French city during WWII. Nolan and his casting department recently began testing teenagers in London for lead roles, but the director also wanted to nail down some choices for the few adult roles in the film before the holiday.

Warner Bros. has dated the film for July 21, 2017. The large-scale production will be shot on a combination of Imax 65mm and 65mm large format film for maximum image quality and high-impact immersion. Shooting will begin in May using many of the real locations of the true-life events, which form the background for the story.

Christopher Nolan’s Next Film May Be About WWII's Operation Dynamo

Christopher-Nolan-122715-Dragonlord.jpg

“And Christopher Nolan is coming right behind me,” Quentin Tarantino said in a recent talk with Paul Thomas Anderson about The Hateful Eight and 70mm projection. Tarantino was referring to the fact that, while The Weinstein Company had convinced 100 theaters in 44 markets to install or refurbish their 70mm capabilities, the move was an investment in the future.

Filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson are shooting in panoramic formats and Nolan — who often shoots in wide IMAX formats — has an upcoming mysterious film set for summer 2017. Tarantino and PTA didn’t say what that film was, but the implication is clear: you’ve got 70mm installed and someone like Nolan is going to make good use of it.

According to La Voix Du Nord in France, Nolan is prepping a WWII inspired by Operation Dynamo, AKA the near-miraculous evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkirk which took place from May-June in 1940. The operation was sanctioned when large numbers of Belgian, British, and French troops were cut off and surrounded by the German army during the Battle of France. 198,000 British and 140,000 French and Belgian troops were saved in the effort.

Christopher Nolan's Next Film Gets July 2017 Release Date

Christopher-Nolan-Vault-Dragonlord.jpg

Christopher Nolan's next film will hit theaters July 21, 2017. The Interstellar director is making the movie for Warner Bros., his longtime partner. The studio holds worldwide rights to the project. In keeping with the director's wishes, plot details are being kept top secret. The first news of the film came when Warners dated it late Monday.

Nolan's next outing opens opposite Universal's Pitch Perfect 3 and an untitled animated film from Fox. In terms of nearby tentpoles, it will open one week after the next installment in Fox's Planet of the Apes franchise and a week before Sony and Marvel's untitled Spider-Man.

Last year Interstellar, Nolan's ambitious space epic, grossed $675 million at the global box office. Paramount and Warners teamed on the event title, with Paramount handling domestic distribution and Warners, international.

Together, Nolan and Warners made the blockbuster Dark Knight trilogy, which revived the marquee Batman film franchise. Nolan serves as executive producer on Zack Snyder's upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25, 2016).

Holy Crap they are making Pitch Perfect 3??? number 2 was lame as hell

Interstellar was Boss

Meh, his last two movies have sucked. He was my favorite director for a while but he may be the new M Night.

Lol fuck the haters i loved Interstellar and TDKR.

Spoiler: it's all a dream or an illusion or some shit

woah woah woah, no one can be the new M Night except M night, it's a level reserved only for him. just because you didn't like his last 2 movies doesn't mean he comes anything even remotely close to lady in the water

No shit, comparing either of those to something like The Last Airbender is fucking absurd.

Unbreakable > every Nolan movie

Interstellar was a great movie. I have a soft spot for time travel, space travel, and paradox theories though.

TDKR felt like he was going through the motions and just trying to finish up the contract, though. It wasn't a bad movie, I liked it, but it didn't live up to the first two.

Nolan is way better than Shamalamadingdong.

Of course he is. All I meant was that he was a visionary director who made some hits and eventually he got carried away and lost in his own bullshit. But Nolans best is better than M Nights and his worst is not as bad.
