byd is a $10K, you have to expect it to outsell a $35K tesla, and it does that..... barely....... china has the worlds most competitive EV market, and the only way that BYD can compete is to bring out an uber cheap vehicle that might not even profit at that price.... in reality, BYD is not competing with Tesla, and there's a chance that BYD is cooking the books.China's BYD set to overtake Tesla as world's top EV seller.
China's BYD is set to overtake Elon Musk's Tesla as the world's biggest seller of electric vehicles (EVs), marking the first time it has outpaced its American rival for annual sales. On Thursday, BYD said that sales of its battery-powered cars rose last year by almost 28% to more than 2.25 million.
Tesla, which is due to reveal its total sales for 2025 later on Friday, last week published analyst's estimates suggesting that it had sold around 1.65 million vehicles for the year as a whole.
The US firm has faced a tough year with a mixed reception to new offerings, unease over Musk's political activities and intensifying competition from Chinese rivals. In October, Tesla introduced lower-priced versions of its two best-selling models in the US in a bid to boost sales. It had faced criticism that it had been slow to release new and more affordable options to stay competitive.
Musk, who is already the world's richest man, is tasked with significantly boosting Tesla's sales and stock market value over the next decade to secure a record-breaking pay package. The deal, which was approved by shareholders in November, could see him getting a payout of as much as $1tn (£740bn).
As part of the agreement, Musk also has to sell a million humanoid robots over the next ten years. Tesla has invested heavily in its "Optimus" product and self-driving "Robotaxis". Tesla sales slumped in the first three months of 2025 after a backlash against Musk's role in US President Donald Trump's administration. Besides Tesla, the multi-billionaire's business interests also include the social media platform X, the rocket firm SpaceX and the Boring Company, which digs tunnels. Those commitments, along with running Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), led some investors to suggest that Musk was not focusing enough on Tesla. Since then Musk has pledged to "significantly" cut back his role in the US government.
Despite BYD's rapid expansion in recent years, its sales growth slowed in 2025 to the weakest rate in five years. The Shenzhen-based firm faces mounting competition in China, its key market, from a surge of EV makers like XPeng and Nio. Still, BYD remains a global EV powerhouse as its prices often undercut rival carmakers. The company's rapid expansion - especially in Latin America, South East Asia and parts of Europe - comes despite many countries imposing steep tariffs on Chinese EVs. In October, BYD said the UK had become its biggest market outside China. The firm said that its sales in Britain surged by 880% in the year to the end of September, driven by strong demand for the plug-in hybrid version of its Seal U sports utility vehicle (SUV).
plus the new battery chemistry is literally fireproof, better charge /discharge cycles, and less than half the cost of lithium, boomers believe any old shit they read on facebook..Where are you getting this information? Seems lile BYD batteries are more reliable than Teslas

the headline would be similar to saying Ford EcoSport overtakes BMW X3 in sales
even the model 3 produces nearly double the revenue as the top selling byd and model y 3x times as much...... there's a reason why no investor considers BYD as a threat to Tesla, BYD has a market cap of hundred+ billion, Telsa is 1.5 trillion

says the dude comparing a byd to teslaThis right here is peak candog.

you do know that the top selling byd is a 10K vehicle and the top selling tesla is a 35K vehicle right? In china, colossal brands dont matter as much as you think, it's the worlds most competitive market, where colossal brands like toyota, ford, chevy, bmw, audi, mercedez have all tried to compete and died trying. Tesla is the only one left and they are plenty competitive and dominating in some respects. It would be difficult to match per unit sales of a $35K vehicle vs a $10K vehicle, of course the 10K$ vehicle is going to be a better value, and losing to a budget player was inevitable, even BYD isnt safe, they can very well lose as well, not to Tesla, but to Geely.Think of it more like Tesla is General Motors, BYD is Toyota, but it's all just potential at this stage.
Both have something akin to vertical integration, so a bunch of the criticism of BYD in this thread is, frankly, bullshit.
The winner will be the one that produces the better value car. Not the cheapest - the better value car. BYD, like Toyota, is fighting a colossal brand with enormous name value, but that won't matter to the consumer as the decades roll on.
Tesla has more irons in the fire than just EVs though but they're going to get challenged on every single front sooner or later. It's one thing to race into the lead in the market, it's another to maintain your position.

my comparison stands, it's like comparing gas cars, the top selling Rav4, which sold 450K+ units to a BMW x3 which sold 50K units, price has a gigantic factor and it should be obvious that they dont compete with one another, no one in their right mind compares a $30K vehicle to a $50K vehicle, yet here we are.... The people spending 3.5x on a vehicle arent looking at budget boxes...... and since elon has been so successful, he has no desire to sell budget cars (which is unfortunate).
about when this thread was made was the original waltz take which was an amazing prediction
