Charles Oliveira, overrated ground game?

I agree Islam is vulnerable to punches. That's already been proven, but you can see Islam's neck is skinny, and his face is fragile.

He is not Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was all but impervious to punches, with such a thick neck and block head.
Islam needs to wrestle bears confirmed.

Oliveira has some of the best offensive BJJ in the UFC. If there's any criticism of him is that his style is high risk and could end up putting him in compromising positions against someone savvy on the ground like Islam. But he owns other BJJ black belts like Porier.

Again, Islam got taken down by a fireplug-type fighter.

We disagree on how much that meant. I think Moses didn't lose the position because of "excitement," but because of how smoothly and casually Islam handled it, postured-down, and shook Moises off.

The real danger from Oliviera are going to be leg locks from the bottom, because I think Moises almost caught Islam, and Oliviera is significantly better at these than Moises.

It'll be an interesting fight for sure. I see Islam as similar to Oliviera. Both are tall for the weight, and calm, almost-emotionless fighters, both submission specialists as well.

I see Oliviera is more experienced and a bit trickier, whereas I see Islam as stronger and more physical. It's a very even matchup.
Yeah we do, I feel like Islam allowed himself to be clinched after exchanges multiple times which can be bad against someone like Oliveira. Yeah that's true Islam's defense played a role, but against Oliveira that could've looked a lot different

I think Oliveira might be able to use a leg lock as a sweep, but I don't see him finishing anything against Islam

Yeah It's a really close, interesting fight

Yeah bringing up fights that happened several years ago is meaningless
It's not meaningless, but definitely not worth a ton of weight when you can see a fighters drastic growth.
We should have all learned this by now, especially with how the Conor/ Dustin Trilogy went.

Not sure if trolling.

Yeah, the guy with most subs in the UFC is probably a bum, right??

This is 2021 and once again, MMA proves they have the worst fans. People who still reference some of the champs losses 4- 5 years ago lack basic common sense.

Khabib aside - Dustin, CharlO and Beneil have evolved to the number next to their name.
Islam still a wildcard.... we'll see.

He has undeniable ground skills and vastly improved striking / fight IQ / maturity.

That being said, his strength of schedule (including during his win streak en route to a title shot) is an issue - that is, I don't think he would have 14 subs and however many KOs in his UFC run had he been fighting top dudes the whole time. And that's not on him - he's just staying active and taking whatever UFC gave him.

I’ve never been that impressed by his bjj. I mean it’s certainly elite, but people make it sound like he’s untouchable. Actually, I think Poirier and Islam have a better chance to submit him than the opposite. I really don’t see him winning the bjj or wrestling game against these two.
You’re first imagining fans saying “he’s untouchable” and then you’re backlashing against this imagination.

But one is saying that. Only you, in this imagined debate of yours.

It’s elite. You should be impressed. That is all. You should have just stopped there.

He has great BJJ. However, anyone can be subbed and becomes less dangerous offensively after their foe imposed their will on them continuously. If the opponent can tire or smother Charles, his BJJ wont help. But that is a big if.

islam yes. poirier no.

he is the most exciting submission artist in ufc which does leave himself open to get subbed himself but its fun to watch

Lettuce be reality. Oliveira will likely beat Dustin than he will get wrestleraped by islam.

This doesn't impress you?

The dude also has 14 submission wins in the UFC..
His sub wins over lamas and pettis are my favourite

I don't see him as having an untouchable reputation. People don't deny that he has been submitted multiple times before.

Islam would be very very interesting. Poirier will get strangled pretty quick.
