Yeah Departed is weak.

For some reason that movie and Gangs get ton of praise, but I think Aviator is his best movie from that period.

Your probably right there and I think a lot of the issue is Aviator is more of a return to stories driven by characters and setting rather than plot, the other two for me feel like their a bit of a mess, half trying to be Goodfellas like crime epics half trying to be thrillers and ending up doing neither well.

I'd still say Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are his two best, that's the point were I think he had greatest ambition as a film maker being willing to push things in terms of visuals/sound to really play up the story effectively. Goodfellas and Casino are both very well made films technically but I don't think theres anything in them with impact of say the boxing matches of Raging Bull or the late night taxi cruising. Marty working with Michael Chapman I'd say was a very complete film maker, someone with great focus on actors performance but also a very strong sense of atmosphere.

Honestly I'd want to see those two released as UHD titles much more than I'd want to watch Goodfellas or Casino in that format.

It's Taxi Driver hands down, my personal favourite is probably Good Fellas though.
