Movies Casino is Scorsese's best movie

WHY does everyone sleep on Shutter Island? That was a GREAT movie. And dare I say, Cape Fear was better than Taxi Driver.....

Shutter Island is solid. It shows Marty’s technical prowess and its got a great cast top to bottom. The scenes with Ruffalo, DiCaprio, Von Sydow (RIP) and Kingsley are awesome.
You got Jackie Earle Haley, Casey f’n Jones Elias Koteas, Michelle Williams, John Carol Lynch and many other good people in there as well.

I think the only thing that put some people off was the plot twist itself. Some really liked it. Others thought it was poor.


I think cape fear is good but not fantastic. Terrific DeNiro performance, don’t get me wrong but not one of my favorites from Marty. Part of it, for me, is that I compare it unfavorably with the original, which i view as a total classic.

As good as DeNiro is, Mitchum’s Max Cady will always stand out even more to me. I feel with Mitchum, he projects tremendous menace within the confines of a 60s film where much of the violence and sexual threat has to be implied or shown offscreen. In the Marty film, DeNiro dials those elements up to 11 and its less compelling to me.

imposible to pick the best if you're a big fan of the man.

Taxi Driver and Goodfellas are the gold standard. I believe Taxi Driver has got endless rewatch value but it's not the kind of movie you will watch at any random time; you got to be in the right mood for it. it's one of the greatest movies of all time for sure. Goodfellas, last time I watched it I was almost feeling like it didn't age too well, like some of the things that were innovative in its time like language and explicit violence have been so abused in the past ~30 years, some of the scenes were almost cringey. it could be just the mindset I was at the time though. not holding anything against that fuckin' classic movie.

two underrated gems IMO are After Hours and King Of Comedy. After Hours is one of the coolest little flicks I've ever seen. not at the same overall in-depth level of Scorsese's classics, more like just a really fun movie to watch; King Of Comedy kind of combines both aspects. granted I must've watched it some 15 years ago but the impression it left on me, it's among Scorsese's top 5 best works IMHO.

Yeah Departed is weak.

For some reason that movie and Gangs get ton of praise, but I think Aviator is his best movie from that period.

Goodfellas’ rewatchability is through the roof. Casino has great replay value too but I still always think that Goodfellas is superior to it. Both great though.

Taxi Driver is amazing in its own right. You’re right, doesn’t have the same degree of rewatch value but it’s a terrific film.

Of course taxi driver is great, everyone recognizes that but it doesn’t have that rewatchability

Taxi driver LToC arent movies you just “turn on” or can catch any point during the movie.

Movies like casino and Goodfellas are like that. You can flip the them on and just watch them at any point in time.

no just causally put on last temptation of Christ sake way you don’t casually just put on Schindler’s List. I’d rather watch casino and Goodfellas over taxi driver and LToC any day of the week.

Good movies come in different forms but Casino and Goodfellas are both excellent movies, made perfectly and also entertaining. Plus you can put the tv on and watch them at any point or have them on as background noise.

No one puts on Schindlers List or Passion of the Christ just to chill.

so in some sense yeah Goodfellas snd casino are better than taxi driver. It’s not like you’re comparing Kick Ass Vs Taxi driver. You’re actually comparing it to other incredible movies.

Goodfellas and The Aviator are probably both in my top 25. Gangs of New York might be as well; the more you watch it, the better it gets. It gets choppy at times, but the acting, the set, the music, and tone make up for it imho.
