Fights that altered careers into the sewer.

Easy one would be BJ Penn vs Edgar Ufc 112 in 2010
BJ smashed Diego the fight prior to this and was considered almost unbeatable at 155.
After this fight with frankie
BJ won 1 out of his next 11 fights

side note. I actually thought BJ won the first fight with edgar. Regardless he was never the same again

Others?

Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje): He's on a 3 fight losing streak and got dominated in each one.
Cain vs JDS 2 and 3(Killed prime JDS).
Garbarant vs TJ(Showed Garbarant's defensive holes).
Woodley vs Usman(Woodley hasn't won since, 6 fight skid and lost twice to a youtuber).
Cowboy vs Tony Ferguson(Cowboy hasn't won a fight since, 6 fight skid).
Rory MacDonald vs Lawler(Took a lot of damage and hasn't looked the same since, but still won a Bellator title).
Weidman vs Rockhold(Herb Dean fucked up his career).
Luke Rockhold vs Bisping(Showed defensive holes in his game which every fighter exploited afterwards, has only won 1 fight since UFC 199).

I miss 33-1 Renan <PlusJuan> Doping boy destroyed my Man!! <2>

Notable that it mostly wasn't the fight, but their time to go downhill; a dramatic turning point.

Fascinating how many top fighters suddenly went downhill. Chuck, BJ, CC, Fedor, etc. They seemed to just fall off a cliff from being great to losing regularly.

Some knew when to quit, others gave themselves CTE and public humiliation.

The exception may be Costa; the Adesanya fight alone turned him to the downside when he could have continued in his prime; but it also wasn't the fight- it was the mock sodomy afterward- he will never be the same.

Fighting well has alot to do with confidence. Confidence is huge in the fight game. Once you lose a fight that confidence is gone and/or is diminished greatly.
Losing fights makes a difference. It's seems as though your dismissing it as if it doesn't matter.
It's a combination of it all.

At the championship level, I guess some would say Usman-Woodley.

Prospect level, maybe some would say Brunson-Shahbazyan.

Rountree-Saki comes to mind. Rountree derailed Saki's entire MMA career to such an extent that Saki never fought again in MMA.

I am sorry, but no. These were great champions that had accomplished much and were supremely confident, and mostly had come back from losses before. They were turning points for them. Now with Costa I agree, but he was very insecure unlike the rest, and a KO/sodomuy probably did ruin his confidence, but that is again because he was insecure to begin with- he was narcissist without REAL confidence.

Took me years to accept his decline. My family used to get together in Hawaii and we would buy a lot of the PPV's and were always excited to watch Penn. We slowly stopped after Penn's decline.

Edgar vs. Maynard 3.

Maynard was undefeated before that with wins over Edgar, Diaz, Jim miller, K-flo.... but after that last fight with Edgar, he was never close to being the same fighter.

You don’t see the juxtaposition of this statement in regards to the thread title?

The OP refers to falling off a cliff.

Silva vs Weidman style.
Yeah I know it doesn't follow the rules completely to the OP. Just wanted to throw it out there because he took a lot of damage that fight.
That's why I pointed out that he won the Bellator belt, mainly it's that he hasn't looked the same since and declines dramatically in each fight.
