While I'm sure it has been discussed here before does anyone else here wonder if Rotten Tomatoes particular way of arriving at its percentages, paired with how many people use it as an indicator of whether they want to see a movie or not, incentivizes blockbuster studios to formulaically play it safe? It's one of the quirks of Rotten Tomatoes rotten/fresh score system is that a pretty mediocre but enjoyable movie that gets one hundred 6/10 reviews will appear 100% fresh, while an original, challenging, deep and somewhat polarizing movie that gets ninety 10/10 reviews and ten 4/10 reviews will only get 90% fresh - but many, many people take the fresh meter as a simple indicator of a review average or of quality. With how much this site affects what people think is a must-see movie, I'm a bit concerned that studios are blowing opportunities like Captain Marvel by trying to play it safe and keep those RT numbers high.
