A member of the United States Army who re-enlisted in the military after he pepper sprayed cops at the Capitol on Jan. 6 was sentenced to more than 3.5 years in prison on Friday.

James Mault was fired from his union job after the insurrection, but was able to re-enlist in the U.S. Army even though he had been interviewed by the FBI about his actions on Jan. 6. At the time of the initial FBI interview, the bureau was apparently unaware that he assaulted officers that day.

Chief Judge Beryl Howell sentenced Mault alongside his co-defendant Cody Mattice. Both received 44 months in prison, as well as three years of supervised release. Howell said that Mault and Mattice had preplanned for violence.

Both men said they did. At that point, they said, they each grabbed canisters of pepper spray and sprayed them at police. Mault and Mattice also admitted they taunted police, telling them, “Your jobs will be here when you come back after we kick the s*** out of everybody. "

"A Texas man who allegedly brought two cannisters of bear spray to Washington D.C. with which he attacked Capitol police faces multiple felony charges in connection with the January 6 riot.

William Hendry Mellors, 50, of Tomball, Texas, “admitted that he joined a crowd of “rabid” protestors on U.S. Capitol grounds, and the crowd was attempting to push its way inside the U.S. Capitol building, the FBI criminal complaint alleged.

Mellors wore a blue sweatshirt with multiple patches, including one depicting an assault rifle with the words “Black Guns Matter” and another depicting with the words “I pull out” next to the pin. He told FBI investigators he had met members of the Proud Boys at a Trump rally in November, but the report did not describe him as a member.

Mellors faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Certain Officers Using a Dangerous Weapon or Inflicting Bodily Injury."

In a court filing flagged by CBS News' Scott MacFarlane, attorneys representing Capitol rioter Dawn Bancroft argued that she deserved leniency in her sentencing because she had already suffered grievous harms for her actions.

Among other things, the attorneys argued that "when Googling [Bancroft's] name, she will always be tied to her actions on January 6th."

In addition to suffering from negative Google search results, the attorneys say that Bancroft's gymnasium "lost its CrossFit designation after her arrest was made public" in January 2021, which dealt a significant blow to her income.

Federal prosecutors revealed last year that Bancroft appeared unrepentant about breaking into the Capitol building, and she sent a video boasting about her exploits to her own children.

"We broke into the Capitol... we got inside, we did our part," Bancroft said. "We were looking for Nancy to shoot her in the friggin' brain, but we didn't find her."

Mark Ponder, 56, from northwest DC, is one of only a few DC residents to have been charged in the Capitol riot. He now faces more than five years behind bars.

He was arrested on the day of the insurrection but he was released because the authorities were too overwhelmed to process him, WUSA9 reported.

In April, he pleaded guilty to felony assault. The 63-month sentence is a tie for the longest punishment in relation to the Capitol riot. Robert Scott Palmer was ordered to serve the same amount of time.

Judge Tanya Chutkan said she handed down the tough sentence because she was “appalled” by Ponder’s behaviour and that she was moved by Sgt Aquilino Gonell’s victim impact statement. His injuries led to his retirement from the US Capitol Police force."
