can you solve this riddle?

Why are you guys trying to figure out a sequence? The riddle is just who yells first, not figure out the order of them yelling. This isn't an LSAT exam.

since op already answered it, I guess we just wanna go further to see if these inmates can figure it out and walk

Thats what I thought too. I thought I'd solved it. lol

I know. they should've made it clear that under the brims were all the same color or some other unrelated color

but I would've just gave them do-rags

#3 would have to be super smart to know what's going on with the other two and figure out he had a black hat on, but it's possible.

After that, #1 and #4 would just have to guess (most likely #1 going first 50/50, and #2 claiming whatever was left)

If I was #4, I would just do a ballzy shout out on black. You have a 50/50 chance of surviving, vs. a very miniscule chance, of letting the others all guess wrong.

But the others aren't guessing. There is an order in which they can answer with certainty.

#3 might not be a genius and decide to just guess and shout out first. If he chooses wrong, he is out and leaves 1 and 2 to also guess, leaving 4 a miracle chance of everyone choosing wrong. Or, 4 could just do a shout out first guess and take a better chance at surviving.

"They are not allowed to talk to each other" is a bad rule since you can technically talk to yourself (or just monologue). It should be stated that they can't speak unless it's to state their color.

That said, looks like the accepted answer has been figured by a number of people.

Nawp,

2
3

then

1 or 4.

Only 2 and 3 could know for sure. 1 and 4 would have to guess

Aw shit. You're right.

2 yells.

1 still doesn't know the answer so doesn't yell. That means that 3 has to be black. So 3 yells black.

1 can see a white and a black. 4 knows there's a white and a black behind him. But 1 and 4 can only ever know they're one or the other. Hmmmm.

Also, it should be "Hanged" and not "Hung." Unless the consequence for not solving the problem was to magically have a large penis. In that situation, no one would answer. Only if Criminal 1 had seen two of the same color hats in front of him could he have given the wrong answer on purpose, and then grow a huge dick as his penance.

if I was the judge i'd magically make them get hung, then they'd be hanged by their weiner

Those hats look kind of big. Can they see what color they are wearing? If the question does not specify whether they can or cannot do this, then you cannot answer this.

This. Says they can't remove their hats; doesn't say whether they can pull the brim down and look up

This just highlights how flawed the modern judicial system is

Tbf, I had to look at the spoiler to get the actual question right (who shouts first, I guessed #1) and you got that right (I'm guessing without the spoiler peak). Then in a bid for the loser's consolation prize, I tried to figure out the entire sequence of the riddle and figured out how it didn't actually work beyond the initial question, which is interesting but doesn't count for anything ITT

eh guess you win

Also, one huge thing that answer doesn't consider is that Criminal 1 might be an evil person who might wait in silence on purpose so that Criminal 2 would answer incorrectly. If Criminal 2 knows that, he's still stuck.

To me the strategy hinges on whether or not there's only one guess. If one guy shouts, gets it wrong, then the game is over? If only one shouting opportunity exists I'm banking on somebody playing the odds before the next guy gets a chance. So my answer was any one of these dudes, and if it were me then I'd hope I was #2 due to the clear odds available.

If more than one guess can take place you gotta make sure nobody can hear the other guesses. Lots of complexities here.
