Can we talk about overrated bands?

I'd say U2, considering I think they had the highest grossing tour ever. No question they are a great band, but overrated.
Yeah U2 comes to mind. There top 10 best songs are great but after that it's very average. They sell out soccer/football stadiums like it's nothing and are arguably a top 3 most popular band of the last 20 years when it comes to touring which is shocking

Kill 'Em All
Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
And Justice for All
Black

And numerous other songs. I know it's trendy to hate on them but damn.

Nirvana for me. Grew up in the 90s. Nothing spectular or different than other grunge bands.
Yeah Metallica is only like 1 out of a handful of US bands ever that has sold 100 million albums, there's greatest hits you'd struggle to keep it to only 30 songs, and theyve sold out stadiums in 5 different decades........

Calling them over rated is an extremely poor take, if anything the amount of material and work they put in touring is unreal

I think Nirvana is lauded more for the fact that rock music was much different after they hit it big, not their actual level of talent. Alternative rock was certainly around prior to Nevermind, but it wasn't exactly very popular. Hell, the biggest band in the world at that time was Guns n Roses, and they basically became unpopular within a few months after Smells Like Teen Spirit hit. Nirvana's influence is undeniable, for better or worse, even though Kurt just wanted to rip off Pixies.

I never liked Nirvana or Foo Fighters as much as most people did...but saying Queen had 3 songs that were better than subpar / lame is a bold statement. What are the three decent songs in your opinion?h.

You could argue that not knowing those three songs besides Bohemian Rhapsody does atest to them having a good deal of variety I spose. I think if you were going to be critical of them it would be more that they were mostly a singles band but still that does amount to a lot of good stuff as I don't think they ever badly dropped off whilst Freddy was alive.

Nirvana I spose the most obvious argument is the Pixies were better and maybe that setting the starndard for Grunge doesnt really carry the same importance now the movements had its day.

From my youth I spose Oasis rather stand out, were hyped as gods at the time but honestly I find only some of the really early stuff like Columbia that played up the noise and snarkiness to be especially great, besides that its actually those Noel acoustic B-sides are the main thing I listen to that often anymore.

Mod inching to move this thread to juekbox were it will die on its ass. <45>

Yeah Queen has plenty of variety. They have a whole subgenre within their catalogue that I personally don't care for but which is its own separate thing...it seems like kiddie music to me...Radio Gaga and Ride My Bicycle, etc. But then among their stuff I do listen to Bohemian Rhapsody is nothing like Another One Bites the Dust and that is nothing like I Want it All.

I think the term "overrated" gets thrown around too loosely. For example:

KISS were not great musicians, nor songwriters. They were a party rock band known for their gimmick and showmanship. In that context, they seem pretty fairly rated. No one is calling them Stevie Wonder level musicians or songwriters.

Nirvana was a basic three-piece grunge band. They had a very dissonant sound, very power chord heavy, interesting lyrically, and Cobain's voice, while not technically greet, was unique. The sound worked for the Gen X, flannel-wearing teens of the time. Not overrated in that context. Adding higher-level musicianship might have actually been a detriment to their sound.

Besides staying relevant for so long I spose I big factor in the diversity was all the members were song writters with different styles, not just album tracks either but all of them writting songs that would be considered the bands best known.

For some reason Lenny Kravitz and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have their shittiest songs become their biggest hits. They both have good stuff but then shit like Dani California and Fly Away become their signature songs.

if you have way too much time on your hands you might get a kick out of these

Most musicians cant even make a hit song and bands in here are getting trashed for making multiple good albums. We cant all be angsty 20 somethings forever.
<{cruzshake}>

Imagine Dragons are the definition of a trash over produced band getting shoved into the mainstream. Every single song they make has the same structure and "anthem" sound like they make music strictly for commercials.

You favorite band is overrated. There, I covered all of them.

Reality is most very successful bands tend to be overrated and some under the radar ones underrated. But then the people that say stuff like Queen only had 3 good songs is just dumb. They may be a little overrated, but they had a hell of a lot more than 3 good songs. Basically don’t do the opposite of underrating a band because you think they are overrated.

I don't know if I would call their songs safe. They were kind of like the rock version of 2 Live Crew and sex hop when it came to songs like Love Gun or Lick it Up. I mean definitely tamer and less explicit than 2 Live Crew...or Prince for that matter...but still not all that safe in glam rock terms.

They don't have a whole lot to say with their lyrics otherwise in the vast majority of their material. But it's not like they were pretending to be badass while singing Stryper songs.

Anyway, which song do you think is their decent one?
Detroit rock city is the only one I kinda like. But it still sounds kinda tame compared to their image.

I mean Gene Simmons looks like a literal demon when he sticks out his inhumanly long tongue and lets fake blood drip from his mouth. These are the guys that had parents worried that their kids were devil worshippers.

So then you expect them to have some hardcore dark and gritty music like black Sabbath, but then you hear it and they sound like warrant or poison and it just kinda doesn't match.

As a guitar player, we all hated Nirvana back in the day because they basically dumbed down the guitar until basically even today if you think about it. Not a whole lot of guitar complexity came out of mainstream rock after they got big and took over.

Now that I'm older, I will say this. Try and write a simple 4 chord song that sounds as good as anything Nirvana did. Guarantee you can't write a melody that's close to as catchy to even any of their mid level hits. Seems easy but it's not. Kurt had a knack for writing melodies. Even Dave Grohl who is a pro himself said he just sat back and let Kurt do the work because he was way better at it than Dave was.

Now I think bands can be good but overrated as well. Pearl Jam is one of them. They had one and a half good albums and then I don't think they've had a single memorable hook since the song Better Man.
